Evalon Pills (Estriol Tablets) are used to treat Atrophy of the lower urogenital tract related to oestrogen deficiency, notably for the treatment of vaginal complaints such as dyspareunia, hot flushes and night sweating, dryness and itching.
It is also used treat infertility due to cervical hostility, prevention of recurrent infections of the vagina and lower urinary tract, management of micturition complaints, improve wound healing in postmenopausal women undergoing vaginal surgery or help assess cervical smears taken from postmenopausal women and for prevention of osteoporosis.
In case you are using Evalon tablets for the treatment of symptoms only in and around the vagina, products applied directly inside the vagina should be considered before medications that are taken orally.
Active Ingredient present in Evalon Tablets
The active ingredient present in Evalon Tablets is Estriol (Oestriol). Each Evalon tablet contains 1 mg or 2 mg of Estriol.
Generic forms and brand names of Estriol
Estriol is available under various Drug trade names that include Evalon, Lynoral, Ovestin, Cenestin, Enjuvia, Estrace, Femtrace, Ogen, Premarin.
Evalon , manufactured by Organon Pharmaceuticals (a division of Schering-Plough / Merck & Co), India is available as tablets of 1 mg and 2 mg.
Evalon Tablets - Storage Requirements
Evalon tablets are to be stored at room temperature (15°C to 30°C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store above 30°C. Keep them in the original package. Protect from light.
Dosage And Administration
Estriol Dosage is based on the patients age and medical condition, response to therapy, and use of certain interacting medications. Take Evalon tablets orally, with or without food. Swallow the tablets whole, do not chew.
Atrophy of the lower urogenital tract:
4 mg to 8 mg per day for the first weeks, followed by a gradual reduction, based on relief of symptoms, until a maintenance dosage (e.g. 1 mg to 2 mg per day) is reached.
Pre- and postoperative therapy in postmenopausal women undergoing vaginal surgery:
4 mg to 8 mg per day in the 2 weeks before surgery; 1 mg to 2 mg per day in the 2 weeks after surgery. Climacteric complaints such as hot flushes and night sweat ing 4 mg to 8 mg per day during the first weeks, followed by a gradual reduction. The lowest effective dosage should be used. In case of long- term treat ment in women with an intact uterus, monitoring of the endom etrium or, alternatively, concomitant use of a progestagen is recommended.
A diagnostic aid in case of a doubtful atrophic cervical smear:
2 mg to 4 mg per day for 7 days before taking the next smear .
Infertility due to cervical hostility:
In general 1 mg to 2 mg per day on days 6 to 15 of the menstrual cycle. However, for some patients dosages as low as 1 mg per day are enough, whereas others may need up to 8 mg per day. Therefore, the dosage should be increased each month until an optimal effect on the cervical mucus is obtained
Missed Pill Instructions For Evalon Tablets
A missed dose of Evalon tablets should be taken as soon as remembered. In case it is more than 12 hours overdue the missed dose should be skipped and the next dose should be taken at the normal time. The tablets should be swallowed with some water or other drink, preferably at the same time everyday.
Evalon Tablets Contraindications
Evalon Tablets are contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity (allergy) to Estriol or any of the inactive ingredients present in this medicine. The other contraindications are:
Known, past or suspected breast cancer
Known or suspected estrogen-dependent malignant tumors (e.g. endometrial cancer)
Undiagnosed genital bleeding
Untreated endometrial hyperplasia
Previous idiopathic or current venous thromboembolism (deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism)
Active or recent arterial thromboembolic disease (e.g. angina, myocardial infarction)
Acute liver disease, or a history of liver disease as long as liver function tests failed to return to normal
Porphyria (Rare inherited disorders in which an important part of hemoglobin, called heme, is not made properly)
Rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption
Evalon Tablets Side Effects
The possible side effects reported in patients treated with Evalon tablets are given below:
Irritation or itching of the skin in or around the vagina
Increased discharge from the vagina
Cystitis-like symptoms (pain on passing water or urine)
Passing water (urine) more often
Dark patches or small red marks on the skin
Red painful swellings or bruising on the legs
Premenstrual tension (PMT) symptoms
Fast or irregular heart beat (palpitations)
Breakthrough bleeding or spotting from your vagina
Skin rash or allergy to the sun
Swollen, tender or painful breasts
In case any of the above side effects persist or you consider them severe then inform your doctor or pharmacist.Tell your doctor immediately in case you develop any of the following symptoms:
Pain in your chest that spreads to the arm or neck
Sudden swelling of the face or throat which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing and nettle rash or itchy skin, severe irritation, reddening of blistering of the skin
Unexplained migraine-like headache, with or without eyesight problems
Painful swelling in your legs, sudden chest pain and difficulty breathing
Yellowing of your skin or the whites of the eyes (jaundice)
Dimpling of the skin on the breasts, changes in the nipples or lumps that you can see or feel.
A serious allergic reaction to this medicine is rare, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), dizziness, trouble breathing.
The warnings and precautions associated with use of Estriol Tablets (Evalon pills) are given below:
Estrogen and estrogen/progestin therapy like Evalon tablets has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction and stroke, as well as venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
An increase in the number of myocardial infarctions and strokes and Venous thromboembolism (VTE) has been seen in women receiving CE compared to placebo.
Endometrial Cancer: The use of unopposed estrogens in women with intact uteri has been associated with an increased risk of endometrial cancer.
Breast Cancer: The use of estrogens and progestins by postmenopausal women has been reported to increase the risk of breast cancer.
Dementia: The use of estrogens and progestins by postmenopausal women has been reported to increase the absolute risk of probable dementia.
Gallbladder disease: A 2-fold to 4-fold increase in the risk of gallbladder disease requiring surgery in postmenopausal women receiving estrogens has been reported.
Hypercalcemia: Estrogen administration may lead to severe hypercalcemia in patients with breast cancer and bone metastases.
Estriol Tablets Overdosage
Serious adverse effects have not been reported following acute ingestion of large doses of estrogen-containing oral contraceptives by young children. Overdosage of Evalon pills (Estriol tablets) may cause nausea and vomiting, and withdrawal bleeding may occur in females.
Estriol Tablets During Pregnancy
Estriol Tablets are classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category X . This medicine must not be used during pregnancy.
There is no indication for Estriol tablets in pregnancy. Estriol is excreted in human milk.
