If you make too much for Medicaid but not enough to afford a bronze level plan off the exchange and you live in New York, the state now has what is called the Essential Plan. From the insurance companies that have released their benefits list for their Essential Plan offerings, they are a middle step between Medicaid (which is mostly decent in New York) and the metal plans on the exchange. I would argue this option is much better than a bronze or silver plan because there is NO deductible and the co-pays are very reasonable. If you make between 133% and 200% of the Federal Poverty Line, you owe it to yourself to check these plans out. Even if you somehow have employer based insurance and you fall in between these income levels, you still owe it to yourself to check these plans out. The cost will either be free or $20 a month, which is so much better than anything else out there. Enrollment opens tomorrow (November 1st) and runs all year long. There will be no enrollment period once it opens up. Plus I did a sample test for my brother, the exchange will tell you if you qualify for the Essential Plan options and will suggest you go with that plan instead of wasting money on the metal plans.
