It was a Sunday exactly 10 years ago today. We met at an L Word Party having no idea that it was the first day toward our forever after. Ten years together, five years married, two children and thousands of smiles, laughter and tears. I (Summer) spent a quarter of my life with Kendal and so grateful that our ❤continues to grow and thrive. While Kendal is enjoying her much needed and overdue #bestfriend #vacation in Portland, the girls and I hung out in our backyard enjoying our #staycation. As most of you who follow us know, Kendal is the one in the fam coming up with the fun activities. She also has more of the opportunities to spend time with the girls. Well we had a full day spending time at the @mccarthyswildlife. It was a nice surprise to visit the #wildlifesanctuary. While I was skeptical at first, it was the cleanest, nicest place for these displaced animals to rehabilitate. Sam was the best guide and it was obvious she cared for the animals and that they were well taken care for. With @emmy.marie39 leaving for USC soon, I know my time with our girls is limited. Though she’s only been gone a few days, I miss my wife dearly. The #grades on this #reportcard with its tiny font is saying so much. I (Summer) clearly remember Emmy literally buckling down with anxiety in the middle of a morning run in Aug '16. She was so consumed with fear of what was to come and if she had what it took to make it thru her Junior year of high school. Fast forward to today when we received her report card. All of those grades were hard earned and well deserved. For me, these grades don't represent how intelligent or smart, or hard working Emmy is - though she is all of that and then some. What these grades represent for me and Kendal is Emmy walking into fear, giving it her best effort and eventually realizing that she is phenomenal and can accomplish whatever she sets her mind to. This is despite all of the negative messages she receives from society, Caucasian classmates and others saying she is not worthy because of the intersection of her race, complexion and gender. Will see face anxiety and fear again, of course. Unfortunately, it is something both she and I have in common. However, Emmy is such an unassuming, humble and gritty force. Just by her actions and behavior she has inspired and encouraged me to look beyond the anxiety and worry of being the only one who looks like me to be the best and vulnerable at the same time. Thank you Emmy and Kudos to You!! Know that me and your mom are so proud of what you accomplished.
