Koyanisqatsi was a lot more interesting than I thought it would be. Having little expectation or understanding of what the movie was about, watching it was made that much more entertaining. It was surreal in its beauty and images, especially with the menacing soundtrack. It made me think a lot about the visual art of film that was really present in older films like 2001: A Space Odyssey specifically. A lot of the landscape shots in Koyanisqatsi reminded me of the surreal ending sequence of that film. The time lapse shots of cityscapes worked well to get across part of the movie’s main point about humanity’s impact on the world. Switching and building from natural landscapes to more manufactured, mechanically influenced landscapes helped display the dichotomy between the world and what humanity is doing to it. I found some of the soundtrack distractingly dated with the way the synthesizers sounded at times, and the heavy-handedness of the definition at the end kind of detracted from the overall experience, but regardless, it served its purpose and is one of the coolest, artsiest films I’ve ever seen.
For these images, I wanted to channel the weirdness of the movie as well as putting a more modern, micro perspective on it.
