Escape to Hell
My babieeeesss
Since Gaddafi never gets ME pregnant or asks me to marry him 😔🙄 I guess these are gonna have to be our babies
Novels and Essays
Do you think Muammar struggled with low self esteem/confidence? For example, Fidel as much as he was a stallion and was known for sleeping with any skinny blonde that walked it started to take a toll on him mentally. He was aware that women wanted him only for his body and his public image but none of them cared for him as a person either out prejudice or fear. Both of these men were sort of treated like a fetish or a candy rather than a human being… (I don’t think they minded too much but it does get to you at some point)
Well he could be shy. And even coquettish. I don't think low-self-esteem is the right word. People always tell me I have that and I'm like, no? I don't? Can't you see I'm a conceited bastard? 😆
But maybe it's true that he felt sad that people only liked him (or worse, used him) for their image of him and didn't care about him as a real person - he really wanted to be just a regular guy and not be fawned over and treated like a god all the time.
He talks about his feelings about this at depth in his 1998 book Escape to Hell. Moreso about all the mixed feelings that come with being a celebrity and a political leader, about how he was forced to compartmentalize himself just to deal with it, than about women pursuing him, but he also alludes to that a few times.
Adverts - Escape to Hell (and other stories)
One of the first things I learned is that Gaddafi has little grasp of literary classifications. The texts in Escape to Hell are, alas, not short stories but rambling prose feuilletons. There are no characters, no twists, no subtle illuminations; indeed, there is precious little narrative. Instead, you get surreal rants and bizarre streams of consciousness obviously unmolested by the hand of any editor.
In his foreword to Escape to Hell, Pierre Salinger, a former JFK aide and the chief proponent of the theory that it was Iran and not Libya who carried out the Lockerbie bombing, argues that by reading Gaddafi’s thought we shall come to a better understanding of the man, thereby seeing past the crude, scary construct of the western media. He’s correct, of course – and what we find is a mind that cannot follow a coherent thought for very long, is filled with crude dichotomies and nonsense, and rambles along at random, collapsing in on itself before exploding outwards again in a burst of surreal gibberish.
