i was watching a video that made me curious about what specifically makes people afraid of escalators. please indulge me
What specifically makes you fear/not use escalators?
I am afraid of getting my clothes/accessories/belongings stuck
I am afraid of getting on and/or getting off the elevator when it's moving
I am only afraid of using an escalator when ascending OR descending (one only)
I am afraid of the escalator stopping or changing directions without warning
Escalators trigger vertigo or make me feel dizzy/nauseous
Past experiences or horror stories about escalators have put me off using them
One or more of the above
One or more of the above make me nervous, but I could still use an escalator
I can use an escalator without fear
I cannot use an escalator due to a disability or inaccessibility
Other
So I've been using the elevator at work in lieu of the escalators to take our cash upstairs, and I've been doing this for like four months, every shift I closed. A new manager just told me that I can't do that anymore! Even considering that I have escalaphobia. So I'm either going to have to suck it up for three more shifts (thank GOD i've quit already) or barter chores with my other coworkers so they can close for me. But that makes me feel bad, so I think i'm going to try and suck it up.
My plan is to sit down on the up escalator, and see if I can make it through that. I have no problem going on the DOWN escalator, and I think it has to do with the physical act of going towards the ground or "safety", and i'm looking at the ground instead of looking up into unknown territory (AKA the second floor, lol). So maybe if I sit down, I can feel safer, and if I start to experience vertigo again, i'm already sitting down.
I'll look like an absolute fool, but it'll only be for three more shifts, and I'd rather have a mini panic attack than make my co-workers do extra work on my behalf.
I used to have really bad escalaphobia, and I still have it, just not as strong. It developed because of something that actually happened or because of something I dreamed happened. I don't know which it is. I used to avoid escalators like the plague, but in a lot of places I just didn't have a choice. I had to exist there, shaking like a personal earth quake. Eventually I was able to go up no problem. But getting down was a whole other story. To this day I have to try multiple times to get on the moving stairs without misstepping or hurling myself off the steps face first.
I think it's time we acknowledge escalators are actually the worst. Like stairs aren't tricky enough, now they're moving? Excuse me? No thank you. Going up escalators isn't so bad. What's the worst that'll happen? I fall, embarrass myself and hit the step above me, but I'm still moving up. It's not like gravity can really screw me over. But down??? No! I'll take the elevator or stairs. If that level has exits to the parking lot, I'd rather go through a department store exit, take the exterior stairs down, and go all the way around the building to go back in on the lower floor. I'll inconvenience the hell outta myself before I brave an escalator. Unless I'm with someone I'm not comfortable being weird with, I might struggle through it then. But I'll hate every second of it and feel my body jittering for 10 minutes after it's over. I really hate escalators.
