I was in a community for lucid dreamers back in like 2013 when one high-school graduate asked the chat if it was ethical to keep fantasizing about his fictional high-school waifu. I said if the age gap bothered him then to imagine that she's also graduating. He said he "didn't want to feel like it was all made-up" which ???

Boy, it's Equestria High. If you can imagine that she's not a horse, then you can imagine that she's not a minor.

Or go ahead imagine she's still a horse, what do I look like your therapist?

That got me wondering if it's just that I have a vivid and wild imagination... (Lyra Belacqua isn't 12 anymore, I know because I was 12 when we met so we grew up together and she's a tenured professor in her late 30's and no Philip Pullman did not write that but... I don't need him to? Do you need him to?? It just makes too much sense not to be true that she's almost 40 by now, as opposed to staying 15 years old every year for the past two decades.)

...or do some people's imaginations really get limited by the "canon" of the work itself?

Being aware of the canon, sure, I have nothing against that. Yeah I'll reblog the screenshot of the Tumblr comments that say fandomization is like joining a chess club only to discover that "chess" has been redefined as a game with the objective of hitting each other in the face with a giant fish. I can sympathize with that! Yeah I'll be flabbergasted by people who want, like, Saltburn summarized for them by somebody that watched the movie with the objective of writing fanfictions about Felix Catton without watching the Felix Catton movie and so without forming their own interpretation of that character in the movie by watching the movie that the character is from. Many such cases outside of that source material, apparently.

I'm not saying the canon isn't a factor in what we imagine from the source material. I even get confused when fans treat canon as though it is not a factor. (What are you even fans of? What was the interesting part?)

But at the same time my imagination has been able to extrapolate giant robot theocratic dystopias from non-mecha genre works, and werewolves in non-werewolf genre works, and Alternate Universe Everybody Lives future fics. I haven't really noticed the feeling that these are somehow more made-up than the first made-up thing in the first place.

Much as I joke about not recognizing a canon Major Character Death if it were a giant fish used to slap my face, I certainly won't get them mixed-up enough to ask Hartmere and Shenkel to their faces about werewolf mecha-pilot Jason McConnell when that's not a version of this character that they wrote (that's not even a version that I wrote; mecha-pilot Jason and werewolf Jason are different Jasons,) and in discussing the staged show between fans, I know we're all talking about Human Jason in the 12th grade of American High School and a teenager.

I just can't seem to comprehend the sense of illegitimacy that makes it not an option to even imagine that The Character is a 30-year-old hanahaki survivor. Not only was that possible to imagine, it was easy.
