âVolt, weâve been through this.âÂ
Eddie drags his hands through his hair, frustrated and exhausted. He and Volt stand in a dark corner of the club. Cloaked in shadow, the music of the club conceals their heated argument.Â
âEddie,â Volt purrs, âyou donât need to worry.â
âYou know how slammed weâve been. Thatâs putting stress on an already compromised system. And now weâve got another big power drain.â
âCome now, donât talk about our human that way.â
âFirst, sheâs not our anything. Second: youâre defending her now?â
Volt flashes a wolfish smile. âYouâre not intrigued? Not even the tiniest bit? â
âNo.â
âWhatâs the harm? I'm simply getting to know her.â
âOf course. Because thatâs something youâve always wanted,â Eddie scoffs, rolling his eyes.Â
âWhat can I say?â Volt puts his hands in his pockets and leans back confidently. âShe sparks my curiosity.âÂ
Eddie answers with a scowl of disdain. âYouâve got to be fucking with me.âÂ
â--rather lovely, but you donât need me to tell you that.â
âNot at all. Sheâs quick-witted, intelligentâ.â
âDebatable.â
Eddieâs face burns with embarrassment. âVoltâŚâÂ
âAndâI canât say Iâve ever seen a human surge before. Certainly not this one.â
âWhat do you mean she surges?â
Volt grins, âI thought you werenât interested.â
âFor fucksake,â Eddie sighs, ready to stomp off.
Voltâs demeanor shifts from playful to sincere and quiet. âIâm not sure what else to call it, really. Occasionally, part of her head glows and arcs with electricity.â
âWhat the hell is it?â
Bouncing on the balls of his feet, Volt smiles. âI donât know! And that makes her all the moreâŚfascinating.â
âReally? Fascinating?â Eddie looks askance at Volt. âThatâs what youâre going with?â
Frustrated, Volt heaves a sigh of his own. âAnd what word would you choose, Eddie?â
âThreat.â
âEddie, she's no threat. Besides, I can handle anything.â
âIf you don't like that word I have others.â
âAre any of them not an insult?â
âWhat is there to compliment? The human isâ.âÂ
âThink of it like this," Volt interjects, growing impatient. "If Iâm spending time with her, sheâll be too focused on me to be a bother to you. And hasnât that always been the point?â
âYouâre wasting energy on her and itâs only going to make things around here worse.â
âTrust me.â Volt places a gentle hand on Eddieâs shoulder. âI have everything in hand.âÂ
Eddieâs attention wanders as he hears the loud groan of the door opening upon the club. âIâm serious, Volt. You need to be more careful.â
âAnd you,â Volt adds, âshould be resting.â
âIâll just add it to the list.â
âEddieâ.â
âThere isnât enough time, alright? Thereâs too much to do. So unless you want us to blow a fuseâ.â
âWeâre not going to blow a fuse,â Volt assures him. âThough you might if you donât relax.âÂ
âRelax?â Eddie chuffs a rueful laugh. âYeah. Thatâs not going to happen when sheâs here.âÂ
âEddie, you know the house needs this place. I canât just close tonight. Not before the show. She might not come by. And if she does, you wonât even notice.âÂ
Eddie isnât convinced. Not by a long shot. Exhausted, already overwhelmed by the nightâs crowd, Eddie sighs and concedes. âFine. Just a few hours, but only if you swear youâll keep me updated.âÂ
âHave I ever failed you before,â Volt asks with a cocksure grin. âObviously not.â
âVolt,â Eddie says with an edge, âif it gets worse, you come get me.â
Footsteps draw their attention. Looking to the entrance, they see the human scanning the club. Eddie rolls his eyes. âFascinating? Really?â
He doesnât wait for a response. As he walks away his bootfalls are heavy, his expression dark. Approaching the human, he meets her eyes for the briefest of seconds then coldly stalks past.Â
Get rid of her, he tells Volt.
The human shakes her head, annoyed with Eddie. However, when she sees Volt, her smile beams bright enough to light up the room.Â
âAnd here I thought you weren't fond of clubs,â Volt teases as he approaches. âItâs a pleasure to see you again, live wire.â
âWell, I had to come back. The vibeâŚthe showâŚâ she blushes and bites her lip nervously. âThe host.âÂ
Volt feels a slight skip in his current. Stepping closer, he can't help but grin. âIs that so?â
âMmhmm." She bites her lip nervously. "Might have been the best thing I saw on stage. My favorite, even.â
In the charged silence that follows, she holds his gaze. Heat rises in Voltâs cheeks, blushing with a sincerity he never expected. Being honest with himself, Volt finds he quite enjoys the experience. Enjoys her.Â
Gesturing over her shoulder toward Eddie, she asks, âStill intense?â
âAs everâ
âWho is he, anyway? To you and this,â she adds, gesturing around the club.â
Volt lifts his chin and his confidence borders on hubris. âI supply, filter and distribute all the power in the house. Eddie is my predecessor. Heâs been retired for quite some time now, however his knowledge and experience are invaluable to keeping the club humming along.âÂ
Stepping closer, looming over her, Volt sees the slightest note of fear flicker across her features. Though his intentions are earnest, there is an edge to his words. âI feel I should warn you. As you might have noticed, Eddie is rather ill-tempered. I assure you, it is best for everyone if he is just left alone. Especially when he is off the clock and taking a well-deserved rest.â Searching her eyes, he softens his voice. âI do hope Iâve answered your questions.â
âJust...I didnât interrupt anything important, did I?â
âOf course not,â he sings. âAdministrative matters. Your host would never want to bore you with such things. Not when thereâs so much more to experience together.â
She arches an eyebrow. âColor me curious.â
âNow now," Volt teases. "I wouldnât want to give too much away. Not so soon.â
Volt takes her hand in his, imparting the smallest tingle of static electricity. He shoots a quick glance up to the lights, expecting a surge that doesnât come.Â
Good. Heâs either resting or beginning to thaw about the human.Â
Volt returns his attention to her, admiring her body. âI must say, live wire, you are staggeringly beautiful any day or night. But in redâmm mm!âyou are positively luminous.â
As she follows his stare, she gasps. Red satin slips off her bare shoulders and clings to her curves. He gives her a twirl and admires the fit of the wiggle dress and the sheer stockings with a Cuban heel, seams as straight as ray of light. Sheâs already a tall woman, and the strappy black shoes bring her just that much closer to Voltâs lips.
Once again, the human is utterly giddy. âHow the hell do you do this?â
Volt hears her breath catch as he brings his cheek within an inch of hers. He whispers conspiratorially, âCan you keep a secret?â
âSeveral.â
âMmm, so can I.â
âOh, itâs like that,â she says playfully.Â
âAll in good time, live wire.â Still holding her hand, Volt strokes her fingers with his thumb. âShall I escort you to a table? The show doesnât start for a little while, but Iâm sure we can find something to fill the time.â
Eyes lingering on Voltâs lips, she asks, âCan I get a drink?â
âThirsty, are we? Right this way.â
Wrapping her arm around his, he leads the human to a seat, then gracefully takes a spot behind the bar. Volt practically juggles the bottles, turning each step of the process into an entrancing dance. With his signature flare, the host presents his guest with a honey-brown drink garnished with an orange wheel and a pair of glistening cherries threaded on a short cable.Â
âWhiskey sour,â he says proudly. âOn the house, of course.âÂ
After she takes a long experimental drink, a smile unfurls across her expression.Â
âOh,â Volt sings. âHave we found something you enjoy?âÂ
She looks up at Volt from beneath her lashes, confident. Perhaps even a little daring. âMmhm. The drink is almost as satisfying as watching you make it.â
âWhy thank you, sweet spark.â With another blush he gives her a light bow. âYour host does love to entertain.â
âDoes he have any other hidden talents?â
Voltâs slow grin is full of wicked promises. âMany,â he purrs.
âNow I have to know.âÂ
When his attention falls to your cocktail, his eyes crackle with mischief. Volt lowers himself to your drink. With a quick flick of his tongue he takes a cherry stem into his teeth and slowly, gently pulls the fruit free of the cord. The stem disappears into his mouth leaving the bright red cherry pressed to his lips. Commanding your gaze, his eyes never leave yours. One more motion of his tongue and he brings the cherry into his mouth. The stem emerges from his lips tied in a perfect knot. He plucks it free and displays his art for her.Â
In the dark club, her cheeks flare pink. âImpressive.â
She almost matches her dress. Now it's a challenge for him. âIâd be happy to give you a private demonstration sometime, if youâd like.â Placing his elbows on the bar, he leans closer. âWould that be enough temptation for you to come see me again? On a slow night, perhaps, when I can give you my undivided attention.â
As she brings the glass up to her mouth, she uses it to point at Volt. âIâll hold you to that.â
âOh, live wire, I certainly hope youâll hold me to lots of things.â
With a bemused chuckle, she covers her bashful smile with another drink from her glass.
âYou blush deliciously,â he says.Â
The humanâs skin turns an even deeper shade of red. Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, she quietly says, âSeems to happen a lot here.â
âOh does it?âÂ
âMust be all the energy around here.âÂ
âOf course,â Volt says, an unexpected warmth in his eyes.Â
The silence that follows is packed with an electricity that has little to do with the drinks, vibe or the music. She idly spins the remaining cherry in her drink. When she looks up to Volt, the human seems uneasy.Â
âSoâŚumâŚwhat now?â
Volt laughs affectionately. âYou donât do this very often, do you?â
âIâm not usuallyâŚsocial. Especially with objects. ThatâsâŚthatâs very new.â
âThen allow me to take the lead.â His hand hovering above hers, he asks, âMay I?â
She nods. âYou may.âÂ
Volt takes her hand and turns it palm up. âPlease correct me if I am mistaken, but I've heard that the lines on an individual humanâs hands are completely unique. Not unlike our barcodes. Some even believe you can discern aspects of your future simply by looking at them. Shall I read yours?â
Intrigued, she tilts her head. âYou can read palms?â
âI learned to read barcodes from Vagabonda, one of our old Spotlight acts. I imagine the skills are somewhat transferable.â
âAlright.â With a subtle chin pop she says, âWhat do you see?â
Volt moves forward until he and the human are mere inches apart then focuses intently on her steady hand, âHmmmmm. How interesting. Yes, quite fascinating indeed.â
 âOh, do tell.â
âWell, according to this line right hereâŚâ Volt traces his fingertip across the longest crease of her palm. âYou've recently met your destiny.â
âHrmâŚI've met a lot of objects lately. Any lines have something a little more specific? Iâd hate to miss my destiny in the crowd.â
Stroking her hand, Voltâs unwavering stare fixes her attention. âTall. Handsome. Dangerously irresistible. Does that ring any bells?â
Eyes glittering, she gives Volt a coy smile. âSomeone comes to mind, yeah.â
As Volt places a kiss in her palm, the power surges. The lights flicker and flare, accompanied by a loud, droning buzz. In his mind, Volt hears Eddieâs surly voice.
We fucking talked about this.
And youâre supposed to be resting.
Volt, Eddie warns.
When he looks up at the human, he sees small motes of light crackling on the side of her head. She merely continues staring at the reflections in the glossy bar. He stands, still holding her hand in his. âI am sorry, live wire. As much as Iâm enjoying our conversation, Iâm afraid your host must prepare for his show. To your table, then?â

For three days we have been sat around a table discussing the novel from which our show is based. Having learnt many things, the two that tower high among the other's is thus..
1)The Idiot is one of most intellectually complex pieces of fiction writing ever; it's psychology and symbolism dance about the page, sometimes in plain sight, often hidden behind words detailing mustaches or dinner etiquette.
2) It is messy, convoluted, poorly structured, inaccessible and quite obviously written for the word count by a man in great financial hardship, pining for his advance.
This said I, I believe my comrades also, have fallen in love with this swirling work of pseudo- fiction, which is both fantasy and memoir. It is funny, political, savage and above all, About life!
Firstly we deal with both the author and protagonists condition, Epilepsy.
Two main core types but with 40 varying levels and degrees of seizure, each associated with differing lobes of the old brainbox. Epilepsy is defined as being 'An Abnormal amount of Electrical activity in the brain'. With this in mind it is understandable that Dostoevsky-and many other artists and thinkers- live with it. Does the condition- which is technically a SYMPTOM of a further underlying brain issue- aide the artist in their attempt to create original work? Does Epilepsy, perhaps, unlock some deep vault in the mind which may give it's host a passageway to a state of consciousness not experienced by those who do not suffer? All valid questions and one's that we have been exploring in our research.Naturally we have not reached a conclusion on any, however It is an interesting thought that brain conditions- be they from birth or experience- may open the mind in ways that the average person may never experience. Autism quite obviously alters the mind in drastic ways, allowing those with it to perceive emotion, situation and communication in violently different ways from the norm and of course this is the issue with such things;that we (the unaffected) perceive these conditions to be derogatory and thus classify them as illness's. Jealously might be why; like watching school friends whisper to each other whilst looking you dead in the eye- we want in, we want to know what they are whispering. Perhaps this the average Joe's response to people who have the altered mind, altered reality that we are not privy to. Of course these conditions are not to be glorified or under thought; after-all they cause pain and hardship for sufferers and their families. But they need not be patronized or pitied either, perhaps this simple click of the perception switch is key when attempting to understand Illness's that are still alien to even the most qualified medical professionals.
So much food for thought I may well need a gastric bypass which could result in my intestines having to re configure so as to be satisfied with less sustenance entering my body, which in turn means my brain would need to fire off less impulses to the lobe that controls appetite and consumption... which might mean I eventually loose weight..or have a stroke.
I had a drop seizure, or grand mal seizure. I was in my womyns' studies class and I could see my hand raising above my head and I tried to put it down but I couldn't, and that lack of control scared the shit out of me. Then, thirteen minutes later, I woke up on the floor with the prof, a handful of very sweet classmates, and two paramedics around me. I could taste blood, and just felt so lost and scared. I have been off of my meds for nearly five years, and the idea of having to start at square one terrifies me. I don't have a growth, or tumor, as I just got my results for my CT scan. Now on to the EEG and the neurologists and the uncertainty. They have me on the most basic drug, and I know it isn't helping, I feel like I'm missing so many things and my head hurts all the time. I'm writing this out because this is my diary, this is my personal journal, and my epilepsy is a big part of who I am. I am also worried, that because of how I look (which lets be serious society associates with me being gay, and I am) will change how my doctors treat me. I hope I'm wrong. I'm just scared. I don't say that very often, I don't like to admit that things scare me... but this does. I just thought it was all over.
