Made Up Story: Nico (House Comes With a Bird x F!reader
A/N: Ephemera AU. Takes place some time after Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own. Nico and his Osita are living together. I've missed my soft wealthy weirdo. I found this languishing in my WIP folder and I was like why not? What if Nico has the same doubts and fears as Osita? About 950 words.
Warnings: Age gap. Class and power dynamics. Insecurities on both their parts. Anxiety. A bit of foul language.
“Mierda.” You slit an eye and see your lover standing in front of the full length mirror, wind chimes and birdsong carried in through the open windows. The heat has bled out of the year, replaced by salt-laden winds off the ocean. Nico stands straight, turned sideways to the mirror, sucks in a deep breath, sucks in his gut, brief hollowing of his ribs, then his shoulders slump as he lets that breath go, “Engordando.” You let your eyes fall shut. “Stop it,” you say. “Stop what?” “Looking in the mirror and worrying.” “I am not worrying,” he says, and then those lovely dark eyes slide away from yours.
“Bullshit,” you say and reluctantly pull yourself out of bed, out of that last little bit of accumulated warmth and pad over to him, press your warm front to his chilled, freckled back, tuck your nose into the column of his neck feel him tense as your hands creep around his middle. Nico is very ticklish, a weakness that you have used to your advantage before, but not now, nuzzled in to the join of his neck and shoulder, damp curls at his nape, faint smell of soap and something that belongs to him only rising off his skin, smooth your hands along his sides and feel his breath hitch. “Osita-“ His name for your rumbled through his back, the crook of his neck where you’ve nested, the thrum of his pulse so close to the surface. Slide your hands around the curve of his belly, pinkie fingers brushing along the waistband of his boxers, palms sliding over his love handles, always a little colder than the rest of him, tuck your fingers beneath the soft curve of his belly, and you lean against each other, gentle press of his back to your front, feel him exhale in your arms.
“I’m getting fat,” he says. “Jesus, Nico, you’re not fat, you’ve got a little tummy. That’s normal for-“ “For someone my age?” “That’s not what I said.” You step back and grip his shoulders, turning him away from the mirror so you can see his real face, not the one the puts on for the mirror, for the reflected windows, for the online vultures who pick him out in the background of an art exhibit or movie premier. “Baby,” you say and he narrows his eyes. A bit unfair and you both know it, he tends to short circuit when you call him Baby, glide your palms down his arms to find his hands and take them. “Is this about that stupid article?” A half paragraph blurb with a pap photo of you smiling on Nico’s arm at the Beasts of The Bubble premier. Dollar store Leo DiCaprio and his Meth Trailer Mistress! “Yes. No. I don’t know.” His eyes flick away from yours. “I just— the things they say. They said I was like Leonardo DiCaprio! That fucking guy!—“ A laugh bubbles up in your throat and dies down. Nico’s eyes are huge, frightened. “I’m getting old, Osita. And you are so young. I worry I am not being fair to you, that i am taking advantage, that you will see this and fly away—“ You reach for him, steady him and make him look at you, cradle his face in your hands, and your heart twists inside you. How often have you felt the same dread that shines behind his eyes? Gold digger. Dumb slut. Stupid little girl. That crawling fear that everyone else is right—
“They don’t know us.” Those dark, fretful eyes lock on yours, he blinks at you and finally stills. They don’t know us, the phrase passed between the two of you like a secret spell. They don’t know that Nico is terrified of centipedes and that you are the one who has to gently escort the spiders outside. That Nico stood up to your wine-drunk Mom on Christmas Eve. I don’t know what you see in her. I see her. How is it that you do not? The way he laughs when it’s just you and him, laughs with his whole body, leans on you and howls, his eyes turned to crescents. His arms banding around you whenever you feel scared or uncertain or sad, no matter where or when or who’s watching. They don’t know that he talks in his sleep. His cheek twitches under your palm. What you feel for Nico is too big and too complicated to put into words, not pretty words, so you wrap your arms around him and hold him close. “They don’t know you. They only think they do. They see you and me together and make up a story about us. That TMZ asshole. My fucking folks--“
“Do you ever worry that they are right?” You can’t lie to Nico, your odd, oft distracted man who doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. “I did at first,” you say, “But not anymore.” “Not any more,” says Nico. “You take care of me when I’m sick,” you say, “You make sure i fill my meds and wake me up when I’m having bad dreams. You wouldn’t do all that if you just meant to ditch me. You stood up to my Mom. Nobody stands up to my Mom.” “Your mother is a piece of work,” says Nico. “That’s a funny way of saying ‘cunt’.” Nico huffs and his lips quirk in an almost smile. He rests his face into the space between your neck and shoulder, you feel the tension in his shoulders bleed out under your hands. “I’m being foolish again, aren’t I?” “Maybe a little.” “I’m not going anywhere,” says Nico. “I’m not either.”
