Elephantastic #MondayMotivation shout out from top notch conservation #wildographer, author & co-founder of @biglifeafrica, @nickbrandtphotography, straight from @amboselinationalpark Let us protect elephants, especially the last few big tuskers of E. Africa, because with tusks this size, the demand for their ivory is such that tragically few have lived out their natural lives. This bad boyβs name is Craig (as named by Cynthia Moss, the legendary elephant researcher & founder of @amboseli_trust.) . Craig lives in the Amboseli/Tsavo/Kilimanjaro region where Big Life Foundation (@biglifeafrica) operates, the non-profit organization @nickbrandtphotography co-founded with Richard Bonham to help protect the wild animals of that part of the world. . Big Life has so far succeeded beyond expectations in helping to protect the extraordinary elephant population here. In 2019, zero elephants were poached in the 1.6m. acres that Big Life patrols, and only one elephant was killed in human/elephant conflict. But as human development spreads rapidly into Craigβs habitat, the challenge to protect the animals in this ecosystem become all the greater. . Please go to to http://www.biglife.org to learn more and maybe even donate . . Photo is ELEPHANT ON BARE EARTH, AMBOSELI, 2011. It is published in ACROSS THE RAVAGED LAND, available from bookstores, Amazon, etc. . Limited edition platinum prints available at @houkgallery @faheykleingallery @atlasgallery @cameraworkgallery . #Wildography #wildlifephotography #nickbrandt #nickbrandtphotography #acrosstheravagedland #elephant #environmentalphotography #conservationphotography #biglifeafrica #monochromemonday #blackandwhite #elephant #craig #craigtheelephant #blackandwhitephotography #monochromatic #saveelephants https://www.instagram.com/p/CHGgcHGg2g0/?igshid=5nck3vkjajzk
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
The first time I saw Wolfgang Tillmansβs photography was actually here in Dublin, in the IMMA.
He is famous for capturing night life and the club scene and shooting scenes of intimacy and vulnerability. He brings images to light that usually remain in the dark.Β

Though one could argue that technically many of his photographs are not great, they do, however, grant the viewer admission into a part of a life they would usually not have access to.
And some of his images capture you in a way you cannot turn away from, because they reveal such closeness and intimacy you get the impression you share the emotions with the subject in the image.

Not too long ago, this was a thriving mangrove ecosystem in Mumbai.
Today, in the name of progress and projects like the Coastal Road development, that ecosystem is rapidly disappearing. What once acted as a natural flood barrier, a carbon sink, and a living habitat is slowly being replaced by concrete, dust, and silence.
This is not a question of whether cities should develop. It is a question of whether development can continue while ignoring sustainability. Because when ecosystems disappear, the damage extends far beyond the trees themselves β affecting biodiversity, climate resilience, and the fragile balance between nature and urban life.
Documenting the thin line between growth, destruction, and the true cost of unsustainable development.
