Eyeliner, panic attacks, David Bowie, Cypress Hill, and movie trailers playing silently in the studio. G-Eazy told me he’d played it too safe before, so Freak Show became the point where he stopped holding back.
The album pushed into anxiety, self-acceptance, darker sounds, and the freedom to treat the whole thing like a character he could finally inhabit. He was still calculating tempos and drum patterns, but the polish had cracked enough to let the weird stuff out. Probably overdue.
