How to prepare for a ear surgery
Otoplasty, which is known to be a cosmetic procedure of the ear is generally done to reshape the ear or as a solution to an ENT problem. Through the procedure either the shape or size of the ear may be altered. Individuals who opt for ear surgery generally face the following problems-
· Abnormally large or small size of ears
· Ears disproportionate to the head
· Ears prominently stick out
· Suffered from injury which have impacted the ear structure
During the initial meetings with the doctor make sure to clear out all doubts and questions regarding the ear surgery. Once the date for the surgery is scheduled, one will need to start preparing for the procedure both mentally and even physically. A basic understanding of what exactly the surgery involves will help in speedy recovery-
Preparation for the ear surgery-
· Just before the procedure be ready for a thorough physical examination, which will be conducted by the surgeon. Make sure to answer all questions asked as clearly as possible, especially those concerning prior health problems. Certain routine tests like X-rays and blood tests will also be done.
· Make sure to inform the doctor about the current medications you are on. He may recommend to stop some just before the surgery.
· In case you are overweight, consider losing some fat before the procedure. Although make sure to stop dieting a month from the date of the surgery is scheduled.
· Stop taking aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medicines about a week before the surgery is scheduled. Such medicines interfere with effective blood coagulation.
· Stop smoking sometime before the surgery so as to reduce the risk of complications.
· In case one suffers from a tooth problem or bladder issue, it should be treated and cured before undergoing the surgery so as to avoid infection later.
· Switch to a well-balanced diet and consume more food rich in iron or take supplements.
· If one is suffering from any infection, it should be reported to the doctor immediately. Until and unless the infection clears one cannot undergo surgery.
Preparation just before the ear surgery-
· Arrange for a relative or friend to drive you home after the procedure.
· The doctor generally recommends one not to consume any food and drink on the day of the procedure.
· One should make sure he is comfortably dressed
Post-surgery it is important that one gets plenty of rest and takes precautions so as to avoid the onset of infection. Take prescribed medications regularly and drink plenty of water.
