Earliest evidence of ear surgery 5,300 years ago
A team of several researchers from the University of Valladolid, in Spain and one from the Spanish National Research Council in Italy, has found evidence of the earliest ear surgery performed on a human being. In their paper published in the journal Scientific Reports, the group describes their study of a human skull found at the Dolmen of El Pendónis back in 2018 and what they learned from it.
Dolmen of El Pendónis is a dig site near Burgos, Spain. Prior research has shown that the site was once used by early people as a funerary chamber. Prior research has also shown that the site was used for approximately 800 years, between 3,800 and 3,000 BC.
In the summer of 2018, a skull was found at the site and was put into storage. More recently, the researchers with this new effort retrieved the skull and took a closer look at it. In so doing, they found it bore evidence of a type of cranial surgery meant to cure an ear ailment. Read more.

I grew up with very limited hearing. My mom used to snap in my ears and I would have no idea she was talking to me.
I learned how to speak by lip reading and feeling my mom's throat.
Sometimes I regret having not learned ASL and joining the Deaf community. But I couldn't have known better, I was 7. I wouldn't have had a choice in whether or not I got ear surgery anyway.
It feels like I walk a thin line between the worlds.
If I hadn't gotten surgery, I would have less ear infections, better communication, understamd ASL or BSL, and a community.
But because I did, i can hear, play clarinet, and don't have to deal with the ableism deaf folk deal with regularly.

What Is the Best Fracture Treatment for Broken Bones?
Broken bones are among the most common orthopedic injuries, affecting people of all ages. Whether caused by a sports injury, road accident, fall, or osteoporosis, a fracture requires timely diagnosis and the right treatment to heal properly.
One of the most common questions patients ask is, "What is the Best fracture treatment for broken bones?" The answer depends on several factors, including the type of fracture, the affected bone, the patient's age, overall health, and activity level.
Modern orthopedic care offers advanced diagnostic tools and personalized treatment plans that help patients recover safely while reducing the risk of complications. In this guide, we'll explain everything you need to know about fracture treatment, available options, recovery timelines, and when surgery may be necessary.
What Is a Bone Fracture?
A fracture is a partial or complete break in the continuity of a bone. Although many people associate fractures only with severe accidents, they can also occur from simple falls, repetitive stress, or weakened bones due to aging.
Fractures range from minor cracks that heal with immobilization to complex injuries involving multiple bone fragments that require surgery.
Early diagnosis and prompt orthopedic treatment significantly improve healing outcomes and reduce long-term complications.
Common Causes of Broken Bones
Several situations can lead to fractures, including:
Road traffic accidents
Falls at home or workplace
Sports-related injuries
High-impact trauma
Osteoporosis
Repetitive stress injuries
Direct blows during physical activities
Athletes and physically active individuals are especially prone to fractures due to repetitive strain and high-impact movements. Seeking care from a Best Sports Medicine Hospital in Jaipur can help ensure proper diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation for sports-related fractures while enabling a safe return to activity.
Types of Bone Fractures
Understanding the type of fracture helps determine the most appropriate treatment.
1. Closed Fracture
The bone breaks without piercing the skin.
2. Open (Compound) Fracture
The broken bone penetrates the skin, increasing the risk of infection and requiring emergency medical attention.
3. Greenstick Fracture
Common in children because their bones are softer and more flexible.
4. Comminuted Fracture
The bone shatters into multiple fragments and often requires surgery.
5. Stress Fracture
Small cracks caused by repetitive overuse, frequently seen in runners and athletes.
6. Compression Fracture
Usually affects the spine and is common among elderly patients with osteoporosis.
What Is the Best Fracture Treatment?
There isn't one universal treatment suitable for every fracture. The Best fracture treatment depends on several clinical factors, including fracture location, severity, alignment, and patient-specific needs.
Orthopedic specialists evaluate X-rays, CT scans, or MRI findings before recommending the most suitable treatment approach.
The primary goals of fracture treatment include:
Restoring normal bone alignment
Stabilizing the fracture
Reducing pain
Preventing complications
Promoting faster healing
Restoring normal movement and function
Non-Surgical Fracture Treatment Options
Many fractures heal successfully without surgery.
Immobilization
Casts, splints, or braces hold the broken bone in the correct position while it heals naturally.
This is commonly recommended for:
Wrist fractures
Forearm fractures
Foot fractures
Stable ankle fractures
Children's fractures
Patients should carefully follow their doctor's instructions regarding weight-bearing, activity restrictions, and follow-up appointments.
Closed Reduction
If the bone has shifted out of alignment, an orthopedic surgeon may gently reposition it without making an incision.
After proper alignment, a cast or splint is applied to maintain stability during healing.
Pain Management
Pain control plays an important role during fracture recovery.
Doctors may prescribe:
Pain-relieving medications
Ice therapy
Elevation
Physical rest
Managing pain appropriately helps patients remain comfortable while encouraging early rehabilitation when appropriate.
When Is Surgery Required?
Some fractures cannot heal correctly with casting alone.
Surgery may be recommended for:
Open fractures
Multiple fractures
Joint fractures
Severely displaced bones
Unstable fractures
Fractures affecting blood supply
Modern orthopedic surgery uses advanced implants such as:
Plates
Screws
Rods
Intramedullary nails
External fixation devices
These techniques improve bone stability and allow earlier rehabilitation in many patients.
Recovery After Fracture Treatment
Recovery varies depending on:
Patient's age
Bone involved
Type of fracture
Overall health
Smoking status
Nutritional intake
Rehabilitation compliance
Average healing times include:BoneAverage Healing TimeWrist6–8 weeksAnkle8–12 weeksArm6–10 weeksLeg3–6 monthsHipSeveral months
Your orthopedic specialist will schedule follow-up imaging to ensure proper healing before allowing full activity.
he Importance of Rehabilitation
Healing does not end once the bone joins.
Rehabilitation helps restore:
Muscle strength
Joint flexibility
Balance
Coordination
Mobility
Depending on the injury, customized physiotherapy may be recommended to prevent stiffness and improve long-term function.
Patients recovering from fractures around weight-bearing joints often require comprehensive rehabilitation programs similar to those used at a Best knee replacement hospital in Jaipur, where structured physiotherapy plays an important role in restoring mobility and confidence.
Nutrition for Faster Bone Healing
Healthy bones require adequate nutrition during recovery.
Important nutrients include:
Calcium
Vitamin D
Protein
Magnesium
Vitamin C
Zinc
Patients should also:
Stay hydrated
Avoid smoking
Limit alcohol intake
Maintain a balanced diet
Proper nutrition supports bone regeneration and helps reduce recovery time.
Fractures Around the Spine
Spinal fractures require immediate evaluation because they may affect the spinal cord or surrounding nerves.
Patients experiencing severe back pain after trauma, numbness, weakness, or difficulty walking should seek urgent medical care.
Advanced Spine Treatment in Jaipur includes detailed imaging, conservative management, minimally invasive procedures, and surgical stabilization when necessary to restore spinal stability and reduce neurological risks.
Hip Fractures Require Early Treatment
Hip fractures are particularly common among elderly individuals and often require surgical intervention.
Delaying treatment may increase the risk of complications such as:
Blood clots
Pneumonia
Muscle weakness
Reduced mobility
Modern orthopedic techniques available at a Hip Replacement Hospital in Jaipur help restore joint function and enable early mobilization, especially in complex hip fractures involving severe joint damage.
Shoulder, Hand, and Ankle Fractures
Fractures involving the shoulder, hand, or ankle require specialized orthopedic expertise because these joints perform complex movements.
For selected shoulder injuries associated with ligament damage, minimally invasive procedures like Shoulder Arthroscopy Replacement in Jaipur may be considered to repair soft tissue injuries alongside fracture management.
Similarly, fractures involving fingers, wrists, or forearms often benefit from advanced Hand & Upper Limb surgery in Jaipur, ensuring accurate bone alignment while preserving hand function.
Patients with severe ankle injuries or post-traumatic arthritis may eventually require advanced reconstruction techniques, including Ankle Replacement in Jaipur, depending on the extent of joint damage and long-term functional outcomes.
Can Fractures Lead to Chronic Joint Pain?
Yes.
Improperly healed fractures can increase the risk of:
Joint stiffness
Arthritis
Chronic pain
Reduced mobility
Muscle weakness
Early diagnosis, proper treatment, and rehabilitation significantly reduce these risks.
Patients who continue to experience persistent discomfort months after healing should consult an orthopedic specialist for comprehensive Joint pain treatment in Jaipur to identify any underlying complications and restore joint function.
Conditions That May Coexist With Orthopedic Problems
Many patients undergoing orthopedic treatment also have other medical conditions that require coordinated care.
For example, individuals suffering from metabolic disorders may simultaneously require Kidney Stones Treatment in Jaipur, particularly if dietary modifications or calcium metabolism issues contribute to recurring stone formation. Coordinated multidisciplinary care helps ensure overall health while supporting safe fracture recovery.
Conclusion
Choosing the Best fracture treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis, expert orthopedic evaluation, and a personalized treatment plan. While many fractures heal successfully with casts and conservative care, complex injuries may require surgery followed by structured rehabilitation to restore full function.
Timely medical attention, proper nutrition, physiotherapy, and regular follow-up all contribute to successful recovery. Whether the injury involves the wrist, spine, hip, shoulder, hand, or ankle, modern orthopedic care focuses on helping patients heal safely while minimizing long-term complications.
At Balaji Hospital & Orthopedic Center, experienced orthopedic specialists use evidence-based treatment approaches and advanced technology to provide comprehensive fracture care tailored to every patient's needs.
