Part enneagram discussion, part individual typing. The amount of time (years...) I've spent on enneagram would embarrass most people of a reasonable nature. This blog is an attempt to put some of that study to good use.
I will only do core typings.Â
I will not do tri-typing.
I may do instincts variant typings. Â
My outlook is Jungian, not Freudian. I will not psychoanalyze and explain why you are the way you are. My goal is to provide a guided dialogue to assess coping mechanisms and motivations while helping to map them to a specific enneatype. I'll happily link to literature about the types and potential areas of interest, but I am not a therapist and will not give advice that is authoritatively therapeutic in nature.Â
The Process:
First, it is important that typees have a decent amount of self-awareness. Those who have experienced at least one "crisis of persona" and are willing to deconstruct it are usually straightforward and easy to type. Those who haven't, while not impossible to type, can be difficult due to possible ego identification.Â
It is also important that the typee can lucidly evaluate their psychological health. Specifically, whether their personality is stabilizing or disintegrating.
Note that the process may (one could argue "should") be somewhat uncomfortable. It is easy to get caught up in the glitz and glamour of “finding one’s identity” and forget that the enneagram is based on esoteric concepts with the goal of targeting our individual pathologies. If you either:
Reject or struggle to identify your flaws
Feel unequipped to engage your flaws from a position of detached neutrality.
Are not willing to temporarily set aside your spiritual (dis)beliefs to work with the system.
Then typing will prove either impossible or extraordinarily difficult and, truthfully, I would not enjoy it.Â
Finally, please note that I’m only doing this because I enjoy it and want to. I find the subject interesting and personally fulfilling. I’m not doing this out of obligation and so will not tolerate harassment, condescension or abuse. Disagreement can be thoughtful and cordial. In fact, I expect it to be.Â
Naturally, I will endeavor to do the same.Â
