It was an accident, really — the pair was eight years old and had a habit of roughhousing together any moment they could. hwa was just a little stronger, and a little too determined that day; they hadn’t meant to hurt him. of course, the boy went around telling everyone that the little girl attacked him, that she was some wild animal who couldn’t be trusted. the rumour stuck, and they didn’t make many friends after that.

absolutely false, but no one seems to believe her on that one. after high school, hwa sort of just … disappeared, according to their classmates. in reality, she was just working three jobs to try to help keep her family afloat. the timing was unfortunate, as her youngest sibling was born during that period and, the first time she posted a picture of herself with the little boy, the rumour couldn’t spread fast enough.

they're two strikeouts in at the bottom of the ninth, with the hansung whales barely ahead of the competing team. the third batter is up and two strikes in— the last thing any of them wants is to let him get to first base. the pressure in the air is heavy. after what feels like an eternity, the pitcher sends the ball out, flying. in that moment, it's almost as if the ball is moving in slow motion, hitting against the bat with a single noise so clean it rings throughout the stadium. contrary to prior belief, it's not a homerun. and while it slips through the grasp of the pitcher, the short stop is on the move before he can even process the situation properly, as if his feet were moving on their own. it's not a simple catch, but it's somewhere within his reach as he jumps prematurely. it appears he's overestimated the height! the ball is zooming for his face and—!
