any time someone is in any kind of crisis or upheaval, offer to feed them. tell them they don't have to choose what it is if they can't make decisions, just ask about allergies and preferences and tell them you're just gonna make food happen at their house.

friend having a baby? delivery gift certificate to order food to the hospital after the kid shows up.

someone's relative passes away? offer to make them dinner.

buddy gets laid off? ask if you can order them lunch.

pal stuck in a depressive episode? offer to drive them to fucking mcdonalds, if that's what they want.

people in crisis are tired and sad and angry and the last thing most of them are doing is thinking about feeding themselves. so if you have the ability or time or money, providing that is always, always a good move.

Your employees in Lob Corp aren't people, they're nuggets. Little playthings for you to send to their deaths and return back because even death isn't an escape for them. You're not only allowed to get them killed, you're encouraged to, to treat them as necessary sacrifices. And this is the same thing that every other wing does; some end is considered truly greater than even the greatest amount of human suffering, but such a statement is only possible to stomach if you think of the people not as fellow persons but as numbers, pawns, statistics.

Roland's whole motto--this is this, and that is that--is the idea that others' human autonomy and wellbeing simply doesn't matter. It's different when it affects you. Nobody has time to focus on the suffering of someone other than them, nobody has time to empathize with the pain of others in the city or endeavor to improve the city fundamentally, because everyone's too busy fending for themself, even at the upper echelons. In fact, as mentioned, the wings are the greatest proponents of this philosophy--the suffering of everyone else be damned, the machine must propagate to survive, to stay on top.

Even Angela herself struggles with this, with the fact that she is dehumanized despite, for all intents and purposes, being a person. She is the ultimate sacrifice of Lobotomy Corporation, she is the Child of Omelas; even in the perfect run, where everyone else is self-actualized, she will have only ever suffered. Ruina is her striving to become the most powerful simply because that is what will make her recognizable as a person and not a machine, and learning that even that won't make her truly human in the eyes of the city, because even if she's at the very top, she's still just another monster in competition to survive, at the whims of the city's cruel machinations. Even if she reaches the top, she did so by the same ways everyone else did, by desiring her own humanity at the expense of everyone else.
