Why are students given homework? Sure, it helps teachers to know if students understand what they are doing, but what about the stress it puts on our shoulders? The long nights we stay up just to finish one assignment that seems so important at the time. What about the severe stress and mental breakdowns it gives us? How can teachers sleep at night knowing that a student is currently at home feeling stupid and helpless because they still have 20 math problems left. Why do teachers say that you should ask questions but don't consider that some students have social anxiety and can't ask questions otherwise they'll have a severe breakdown. Why do we leave students behind? Why are students not cared about because they "aren't as smart" as other students. They deserve a chance. And yet we ignore them like they're trash on the side of the highway, just waiting to be put in a dump. They need help. How does assigning hours of homework help that student. It is impossible to empower a student who is up late trying to complete an assignment and is having a panic attack. Yes, I'll admit, teachers have it hard. But as a student, it is hard to sit back and watch my peers fail because teachers don't care enough about the ones that are failing. We need to put an end to this. When students have to pass up their social lives and childhood because of schoolwork, we know something has to change.
