Right now, House Democrats, led by Representatives Raúl Grijalva and Frank Pallone, Jr., are calling on President Biden to block all new offshore drilling plans. This is a pivotal moment and a chance to achieve real progress—We must amplify this call with grassroots pressure.

Representative Grijalva has been a tireless champion for environmental justice and climate action throughout his career, especially in his leadership as Ranking Member of the Natural Resources Committee.

As he prepares to retire from that role, one of his final requests to President Biden is crystal clear: stop expanding offshore oil and gas drilling. We can honor his leadership and protect our planet by making our voices heard today.

The science is undeniable. More drilling means more climate pollution, more devastating oil spills, and further harm to the frontline communities that bear the brunt of fossil fuel expansion.

If the administration is serious about its climate commitments, they must end new offshore drilling leases in all U.S. waters—not expand them.

Why is oil drilling bad?

According to what we can find it says that "Oil drilling is generally considered bad for the environment due to the potential for significant negative impacts like oil spills, air and water pollution, disruption of ecosystems, and contribution to climate change, although it does provide a vital energy source for many societies; therefore, most experts would say it is bad overall."

Amphipods are an important part of the food chain and ecosystem. They are eating OUR microplastics 6.8 miles down, in turn, those microplastics are ending up in us through the seafood we eat.

Microplastics were found in human stools for the first time.

“Lauren Brooks eventually found plastic fibers and fragments in 72 percent of the amphipods that the team collected, from all six trenches that they had surveyed.”

Food is scarce in the deep, so amphipods can’t afford to be fussy. They’ll eat pretty much anything, which makes them particularly vulnerable to plastics.

Amphipods also contained PCBs!

The team found PCBs galore. Some amphipods were carrying levels 50 times higher than those seen in crabs from one of China’s most polluted rivers. When the news broke, Jamieson was inundated with calls from journalists and concerned citizens. And in every discussion, one question kept coming up: What about plastics?

“The world produces an estimated 10 tons of plastic a second, and between 5 million and 14 million tons sweep into the oceans every year.”

Some of that debris washes up on beaches, even on the world’s most isolated islands. About 5 trillion pieces currently float in surface waters, mostly in the form of tiny, easy-to-swallow fragments that have ended up in the gut of albatrosses, sea turtles, plankton, fish, and whales. But those pieces also sink, snowing into the deep sea and upon the amphipods that live there.

In the least polluted of these sites, half of the amphipods had swallowed at least one piece of plastic. In the 6.8-mile-deep Mariana Trench, the lowest point in any ocean, all of the specimens had plastic in their gut.

“It builds upon a growing body of evidence suggesting that the deep sea, by far the largest habitat on the planet, may very well be the largest reservoir of plastic waste on the planet,” says Anela Choyfrom the University of California at San Diego.

Other scientists have also found plastic litter in the deep; just last year, one team documented a plastic bag at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

I have a dream that everyone has clean water

The nature of Ireland is so clean and treated with such respect that I am speechless just looking at it. In the United States I would often go hiking and notice the treatment of nature was so poor due to the lack of respect for the land. Much of the land in the Irish countryside is part of several properties making it more disrespectful to trash someone's private land. However, even government owned property and nature reserves in Ireland are very clean since people seem to care more about keeping the land pristine. In The Story of Bottled Water, a video on Youtube, there was so much information about how advertising has skewed the way people think about tap water even in clean cities. People consume so much bottled water and produce too much waste because of it, so much that some of it is actually outsourced to India to be placed in their landfills. Although Ireland is not clear of bottled water, the Irish people are much better about littering. Most stores require reuseable bags or charge for a paper bag, plastic bags are not allowed to be used in most of europe. As I have travelled throughout Ireland I have noticed that the cities, nature reserves, historic places, and monuments have all been very clean. In part this could be due to the large amount of trash cans that are around, although I have seen too many times a large amount of trash surrounding a trash can within the United States. Being from the U.S.A, I like to believe there is more respect for the land in Europe or at least I hope there is because the United States needs to pick up its game and its trash.
