✈️ FLIGHT DELAY ✈️ . Wouldn’t it be nice if books always launched perfectly and on time? But like airplanes, sometimes they get delayed and all the folks who bought tickets are left gloomily wondering what went wrong. . In this case, it was a backlog at the printer that put production of the SWIFT hardcovers behind a few days. So today it’s launching in e-book format — thus this lovely repost of @readingbee.444’s pic — but the limited edition hardcovers won’t be shipping for another week or two. Alas! . That means I won’t be holding my virtual launch for SWIFT until 9/3, to give printed copies a chance to wing their way to the lovely readers who preordered them. Guess what flew in to my mail this week? . Isn’t it gorgeous? I know the finished hardcover is sure to be even more beautiful, but it’s exciting to have the ARC in my hands! . We’re halfway through #mybookalphabet! Today it’s M for Martin, a major character in my third book of the #noordinaryfairytale trilogy, ARROW. . Martin started life as a character I never thought would need a name, let alone an elaborate backstory. Halfway through REBEL I needed a random faery thug to attack Timothy and make off with his wallet, so I created a lean blond assassin-type who made a brief, spectacular entrance and an even more dramatic exit, and figured that was the end of it. . Except the same character unexpectedly turned up again near the end of the story. And he turned out not only to have a name, but a sly sense of humour and a questionable amount of loyalty to his evil mistress. By the time he showed up yet again early in the next book, I threw up my hands and just let him do his thing. . Martin is, not to put too fine a point on it, a manipulative little weasel (sometimes literally!) — at the start of his personal journey. But as I (and my heroine Rhosmari) gradually discovered over the course of ARROW, there’s also a heart behind Martin’s glittering charm, and a surprisingly complicated history that this book only begins to hint at. . All in all, Martin is a little bit Howl, a little bit Jareth, a little bit Steerpike, and the rest simply his own flippant Shakespeare-nerd self — and he’s also become one of my most popular characters, though you might have to look a bit beyond his behaviour in ARROW to understand why.
