I Instagrammed the Empty Guggenheim and Almost Fell In
The Guggenheim's oculus, the giant glass cap to Frank Lloyd Wright's spiral, is one of the most famous skylights in the world. Did you know there's a mini-oculus in the first-floor gift shop, which used to be a driveway? This was one of the fun facts a group of #emptyguggenheim instagrammers learned today, the museum's 55th birthday, during a tour from Megan Chusid, the Gugg's associate director and resident Wright expert. We checked out the structure's iconic curves, and lesser-celebrated triangles. We ran into some workers hanging around the facade to clean the limestone in Charles Gwathmey's addition. We sneaked some art selfies in the Zero Group show, and posed with the fabulous Jia Jia Fei, the museum's digital marketing manager. We climbed to the roof (admiring the elegant G on the stairwell door) and watched in awe as photographer Kris Graves ascended the oculus, the better to shoot us all. We took some risks to get our own shots too. Just one more inch to get the oculus up close with my new iPhooooooooooo
