Happy Halloween! Recently Iβve been rereading the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini and I was inspired by one of my favorite scenes; during the Agaeti Blodhren Ceremony in the Elvish city of Ellesmera, Eragon is dramatically turned into a Half-Elf. Even though it all happened at night and Eragon has much lighter hair, it didnβt stop me from dressing up as one of my favorite characters!
Evandar was kind of a dipshit
Heβs fighting 1 single measly Urgal (not even a Kull!) and heβs losing, so when a raven βββrandomlyβββ (Elves can possess animals) pecks out the Urgalβs eyes (IE itβs blinded so no threat whatsoever to an elf), THEN he βwinsβ the fight. As a victory-lap he then blesses the bird.
Weβve talked a lot about what major douches Arya and Islanzadi are, but Arya never stood a chance with both parents like this
Ravens and crows are highly intelligent so it might just have been a bird with a grudge against that specific Urgal accidentally helping out a young and untrained prince Evandar out
And yeah according to extra stuff added in interviews, FAQs and such Evandar was Dellanirβs son, and Dellanir was Tarmunoraβs daughter... making EVERY single elf rules since the bond to the Dragons 1 family, except for Islanzadi who was the mate of 1 monarch and the mother of another. βββββββββββelves elect their rulersββββββββ sure bro
Du Weldenvarden (translated as "The Guarding Forest") was a massive forest that covered Northern AlagaΓ«sia. The elven capital of EllesmΓ©ra was hidden deep within the forest, as were the ancient elves that inhabited it.
Went adventuring in the Redwoods today. Totally picked up a Ellesmera and Du Weldenvarden vibe walking among the towering trees and wood tunnels. β€οΈ

So apparently someone on Reddit correctly guessed what the Menoa Tree took from Eragon, and CP confirmed that they got it right but didn't say who they were or what was taken.
Iβm seeing several posts about the Menoa planting the seed for another Menoa tree in Eragon, which is super fucked-up if true, and some comments in the relevant post where they discussed the confirmation that it may have been Eragonβs figurative βrootsβ to Alagaesia that were taken (which is also fucked but in a different way, if true).
Pest eller kolera, as we say in Swedish. Between these two Iβm hoping for the roots, since roots can grow back. Itβd be genuinely hideous for the Menoa to freaking stealth-inseminate Eragon just so there can be another massively assholeish tree somewhere else. Like Linnea, learn your fucking lesson already and stop cradlerobbing.
On Elven Ageing
Itβs canon that elves were shown to the dragon eggs at age 20, and humans were shown to the eggs at age 10.
Going from this, I have 2 ideas on how elves age compared to humans:
1: 1 elf year = 2 human years (of development. Pretty simple, at age 10 an elf is as developed as a 5 years old human, at 30 (around the point where their magical boost starts to fade and they reach βof ageβ) they match a 15 years old human (which checks out since people used to be considered adults much earlier, also adds a certain horror to the war if 30 year old elves and 15 year old humans are considered a normal sight on an Alagaesian battlefield). This tapers of after a certain point; 100 year old Arya is not considered the elf equivalent of 50 (which Iβm assuming is around the 5-800 year mark, accounting for individual competence, wisdom and experience). Maybe you need to divide it by 3-4 from age 60-99, then by 5 afterwards? It gets weird the older they get, since their mental growth probably isnβt also linear.
2: Iβve read here on tΓΆmblur dot com that helicopter-parenting stifles the mental development of a child. Considering how ancient almost all elves are, how late in life they have children, and how rare children are, itβs possible that a 20 year old elf is as physically developed as a human 20 year old would be, accounting for ancient dragon-magic, but far more naive and childlike in their general outlook. Innocent might be a better word, since they grow up in a society that even our most advanced IRL civilisations canβt compete with (in terms of individual wealth and living standard per elf; I imagine the larger scale of things IRL and the existence of multi-billionaires would skew statistics in our favour unless you donβt count them). This would mean that elves are the cranky old coots way they are because theyβve lived to ages no human has in our world, and their peers age with them instead of leaving lonely elders alive as their lifetimes of, say, 70+ years draw to a close.
I saw @saphira-approvesΒ post about how Saphira is the protagonist and Eragon part of the supporting cast, and you know what? Itβs absolutely true. As much as the elves, if not more, everything change that Eragon goes through is because of the dragons, and one dragon in particular. I donβt have anywhere to go with this, except that I remember reading the books and wishing Eragon would have thought about this β over decades of war and raids on Imperial territory, in a medieval setting, with an enemy that isnβt shy about conscription (and even without that, with boys being boys and dreaming of glory and adventure) odds are Brom and Arya and Orik have killed dozens, maybe hundreds of boys just like Eragon each. If Saphira had hatched for someone else (and if Eragon wasnβt Bromβs son/if they didnβt know who he was because of an obscured face) odds are Eragon would have either died during the Elven invasion or during the Burning Plains β because why else would you conscript so many soldiers, if not so theyβll bog down the enemy while your actual trained warriors go around the side? Eragon thinks about it like once or twice and is comforted by Saphira saying something about how she did choose him, but thatβs such a shallow reassurance IMO. Everything about how other people treat him and try to win his approval for them - the gifts given by royalty, the elite training and access to the Ancient Language, the warm welcome he receives when visiting dwarven and elven lands, is due to Saphiraβs choice.
