Answered this already but I'll answer now with a different answer (I'm indecisive lol)! I really like Blackmail. It hurts my heart, I want Aaliyah to be happy, but honestly I'm proud of how I wrote her, in the future and independent and Tyrone's gone and yet still she can't get away from her training. It was fun. And she will get a good resolution from this, when I eventually write the rest of the arc.
𼊠Which OC Is most feral?
Was about to put a different one but I realised pretty much no-one knows it yet, so Elis. Oh my god. Once he's free and out of his conditioning (mostly), he's... y'know that gif with the toddler and the knife? This one?
Yeah? That's Elis. He's absolute chaos, honestly, once you get through his conditioning and training. I have honestly no idea how Lord Wulfric trained him so well. He certainly wouldn't have found it as easy if Elis was much older.
Sadly I haven't written that side of him yet, but trust me. He is.

CWs: panic attack, flashback
Col glances up at the sky as the first flash of lightning lights up the clearing. They're not going any further today. As soon as SĂŚwin returns with the willow bark they need to make camp.
Might as well make a start.
He rummages around in the saddle bag. "Hey, Elis. Will you help me with this?"
There's a small whimper from beside the tree, and Col turns to see Elis, white-faced and trembling, scrunched up against it, eyes squeezed shut, hands pressed to his ears.
"Elis?"
"Please, please don't leave me out here, please please please, I'll be good sir I'm sorry, please don't make me stay out here. Sir please."
Elis sounds terrified and Col's not sure what to do. He needs to help the boy, he just isn't sure how.
"Elis, can you open your eyes?" Elis doesn't respond. "Sweetheart, it's Col. Do you remember where you are?"
"'m in the courtyard, it's a storm, I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry."
"Hey. Easy, Elis, you're not there. You're with Col and SĂŚwin in the forest, remember? We named you. Open your eyes, sweetheart, it's just Col."
Elis opens his eyes cautiously. Thunder booms and he jumps, eyes widening, hunching up small.
Col reaches out a hand and touches the boy on the arm. He jumps again, arms flying out in front of him.
"Easy, sweetheart. Breathe. Put your hand on my chest and follow my breathing." He takes Elis' hand gently and guides it to rest it on his chest, covering it with his own hand. "In, out, just like me. That's it sweetheart, there you go."
Elis looks up, eyes clearing. "Col?"
"Yeah. Yeah, it's me."
"Col. Col Col Col Col Col."
"Yeah. You're safe."
Elis swallows, retreating back into himself, going very quiet and still, eyes slightly glazed. He's gone somewhere he's not allowed to move or speak, Col thinks, and he hates it.
"Hey, Elis. Can you speak? If you can't, blink once for yes and twice for no." Elis blinks twice. "All right. And I'm guessing you can't move either?" He blinks twice again. Col was right then. He holds back a sigh. "Would you like a hug?"
Elis blinks once and Col approaches carefully, wrapping his arms around the boy. "It's all right, it's all right, shh. You're safe."
After a few minutes there's a little gasp, and Elis clutches Col's cloak tightly, burying his head in it, body shaking.
"'m sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry," he whimpers, and Col rubs his back.
"You've got nothing to apologise for, sweetheart. You mentioned being left out in the storm, is that something your old, um, master would do?" Elis nods. "Do you want to talk about it? You don't have to."
The boy gulps. "Master would tie me up outside in storms because he knew I was scared and it was only for a little bit but I wasn't allowed to make a sound and if I made a sound I'd be out there longer and I couldn't help begging and so and soâ"
"Oh, sweetheart."
"Are you, you, you're not going to leave me out here, are you?"
Col takes Elis' chin gently in one hand and raises it until he can look the boy in the face. "No. I'd never do that. You hear me, Elis? Doing that is just cruel. We can't get out of the storm until we've set up shelter, but I will never make you stay outside in it."
Elis' eyes well with tears until they stream down his cheeks, both of them pretending it's just rain.
"Thank you. Thank you thank you thank you."
"That's all right. Have you ever put up a tent before?" Elis shakes his head. "Then it's time you were taught how to. Come on, if you can stand up, let's get started."

After five years of relative peace, Elis' whumper returns.

CWs: conditioned whumpee, past abuse, attempted murder
Elis ducks into an alcove at the sound of footsteps and voices. Heâs not supposed to be in this corridor, not now, but he is and heâs just thinking of running when the voices come into hearing range and he freezes. Thereâs King Leofric, yes, thereâs always the King, itâs his castle after all, but his companion sends a shiver down Elisâ spine. At the sight of him Elis lets out a small whimper, hastily-stifled, fighting not to drop to his knees and bow as he once had to do.
âI was sorry to hear about the loss of your ward.â
âYes, it was unfortunate. He was... powerful. I was saddened by his loss. But it was five years ago now.â
âNevertheless, is there anything I can do? I wasnât able to be there for you at the time, but Iâm here now.â
âNo, no. Just your company is good enough. Although I find myself under greater threat over the past few years, since I lost him.â
âPerhaps some protection?â
âWell, if you insist.â
âOf course, my friend.â Neither of them are looking his way but Elis presses himself closer to the wall anyway, squeezing his eyes shut, desperate not to be seen. âNow, let us discuss...â
The conversation dies away after the two turn a corner away from him, but Elis doesnât move. He canât.
Lord Wulfricâs back.
_
It feels like hours later and yet no time at all when someone shakes Elis out of his daze.
âElis? Elis can you hear me?â
Elis opens his eyes to see a man with long brown hair and a painted black band across his face crouched in front of him, eyebrows furrowed in concern. âSĂŚwin?â
âOh thank the gods. What happened? You were completely out of it.â
âWulfric,â he whispers, every muscle tensing at the name. SĂŚwin frowns.
âLord Wulfric? Heâs visiting, yes, but... whatâs he got to do with you?â
âHeâs the one who made me fight and kill and I didnât want to but he made me and Iâm sorry.â
âOh, Elis. You donât need to apologise. Can you get up, do you think?â
âIââ Elis looks around, noticing their surroundings for the first time. Heâs on the floor of the alcove, sitting on his heels, everything locked up tight. âI think so.â
SĂŚwin holds out a hand and Elis flinches slightly, then places his own hand in the physicianâs and lets SĂŚwin pull him to his feet. He wobbles as his muscles unlock.
âEasy, Elis, Iâve got you. Letâs get you home.â
Elis pulls away before they start walking, itâs weak for him to lean on someone and theyâre not allowed to be weak, itâs bad to be weak, heâll be punished if heâs weak, but SĂŚwin catches his hand and squeezes it.
âYouâre drifting again.â
âSorry, sir.â Elis blinks away the illusion of the estate, feeling a warm, calloused palm. Itâs SĂŚwin beside them. SĂŚwin SĂŚwin SĂŚwin. No-one else.
âItâs all right.â
They make their way through the castle and the bustling citadel to the townhouse, Elis struggling to keep his head high despite wanting to duck down and hide. Col says he should take pride in himself despite everything heâs done.
Elis pulls off his boots as a large black cat trots up to him and winds around his legs, purring loudly. He scratches her on the head, marvelling at how much sheâs grown over the last few years. Mabel fit into the palm of his hand when they took her in, but not anymore. He picks her up and drapes her front paws over his shoulder, supporting her with his left hand.
âHello Mabes. You been a good girl today?â
âCol?â SĂŚwin calls. âAre you home?â
Col appears at the end of the hallway, wiping his hands on his apron, the red colour of his hair ribbon matching the painted band on his face. A knightâs band, as opposed to SĂŚwinâs black physicianâs one. Elis tries to keep the facts in his mind to distract himself from his thoughts. âI was just baking, since we gave the servants a holiday. Canât you smell it?â
âI can smell burning,â remarks SĂŚwin. Col makes a face, before striding forward and giving him a quick peck on the lips.
âWhy are you back so early? Not that Iâm complaining, but I thought you were both working today.â
At this reminder Elis gasps. âThe messages!â
âItâs all right, I have the bag here. Iâll deliver them on my way back to the castle.â
âThank you.â
SĂŚwin nods. âAs to what happened, Lord Wulfric is a worse man than we thought.â
Elis shudders and Col turns to him, looking him over, concerned. âSweetheart, are you all right?â
Elis swallows. No no heâs not all right but he canât just say that, heâs not allowed to be emotional.
âBreathe, Elis. Can you tell me whatâs wrong?â
He holds Mabel tightly, her thick fur grounding him. âWulfric hurt me. Not now I donât mean now, before.â
Colâs eyes darken and Elis flinches. âWas Wulfric the one who tried to turn you into a weapon?â Elis nods. âThat bastard.â
âCol, you canât kill him,â says SĂŚwin dryly. Col scowls.
âI know that. Do you have a plan then?â
âI want to bandage Elisâ brand and then I need to get back to work. If thatâs all right with you, Elis.â Elis nods. He needs to hide it, he canât risk Wulfric or his entourage seeing it, and he doesnât like bandages no but he likes even less what will happen if Wulfric realises who he is.
What he is.
A monster. A killer. Wulfricâs trained killer, and Wulfric will recognise him and beat him or lock him in the basement or force him toâ
Something touches his arm and he jumps, raising his arms to shield himself. Something heavy falls off him with a meow.
âSweetheart. Elis. Breathe. Youâre safe. Itâs just Col and SĂŚwin and Mabel with you.â Elis looks up into Wulfricâs concerned face.
No, Colâs. Elis shakes his head to clear it. Wulfric would be angry, not concerned, itâs Col. Col Col Col.
âYou back with us?â Elis blinks a yes. âGood. Thatâs good. Can you stand?â
Oh. Elis didnât even notice he was on the floor again. He tries to push himself upright but his mind rebels, in fear of punishment. He blinks twice.
Col rubs his back and he gasps, movement coming back in a rush. He loops his arms around Colâs neck, clinging on, burying his head in Colâs shoulder, because heâs allowed to do that now, with Col and SĂŚwin, he doesnât have to be strong and alone anymore.
Col carries him into the kitchen and sets him down on a chair while SĂŚwin fetches some bandages. âTunic up then.â Elis lifts his tunic and holds it around his shoulders as SĂŚwin crouches in front of him, winding the thick white bandages around his torso, up and up until they cover the brand thoroughly, fairly tight so they donât show but not too tight, the slightly rough linen very familiar. âThere you go. That covers the brand. More than just that actually, but we donât want anyone catching a glimpse at the edge of it and getting suspicious.â
Elis nods. âThank you.â
SĂŚwin smiles and gives his shoulder a comforting squeeze. âYouâre welcome. I need to get back to work, will you be all right?â
Elis nods and Col, catching this from over by the stove, says lightly, âWeâll be fine, love. Get out of here.â
âNot until Iâve tried some of that honey I can smell. You must have some to spare.â
Col grins wickedly and eats a small spoonful out of the pot, smearing a little on his lips as he does so. âSorry, that was the last bit. De-licious.â
âOh is that so?â SĂŚwin chases Col around the kitchen, finally backing him against the sink, and Elis watches with a smile as he kisses the living daylights out of Col, tasting the honey from his lips. Finally he pulls back, looking like the cat who got the cream. âYou were right. Delicious.â
âAbsolutely,â murmurs Col, slightly dazed. SĂŚwin winks at Elis and pulls him into a tight hug.
âLook after yourself. And Col. Iâll be back for dinner.â
Elis nods, leaning into SĂŚwin slightly for a moment. âStay safe.â
Itâs a ridiculous comment to make (itâs only the castle, and SĂŚwin isnât foolish), but SĂŚwin just smiled, uncondemning. âI will.â He waves goodbye to Col (who raises a hand slowly in return, still a little out of it) and strolls out the room. A few moments later, Elis hears the front door shut behind him, and Col jerks back to himself.
âWhat was I doing?â he murmurs, and Elis smirks as deeply as he dares.
âKissing SĂŚwin.â
Col blushes, and Elisâ smile turns softer. Wulfric wouldâve called Col and SĂŚwinâs display âdisgustingly intimateâ, but Elis just finds it sweet. For some reason, Col and SĂŚwin being so sweet together always helps Elis settle.
âI was baking, thatâs right. Do you want to read to me for a bit while I get this in the oven?â
Elis nods eagerly and takes the book from Col, flipping to where they left off that morning. âWhen the great became aware of Gawainâs arrival,
There was general jubilation at the joyful news.
The King kissed the knight, and the Queen likewise,
And so did many a staunch noble who sought to salute him.
They all asked him about his expedition,
And he truthfully told them of his triluâ tribuâ umââ
Col slides the tray into the oven and crosses over to Elis. âTribulations. Youâre improving.â
âYou really think so?â asks Elis hopefully, before remembering himself and adding quickly, âNot that I think youâre lying or wrong, I donât I promise, I justââ
âYou just donât believe in yourself enough,â says Col, putting an arm around Elis and pulling him close. Elis nods â he doesnât believe in himself because he shouldnât, but Col doesnât think so. Col lets him have his own opinions but he doesnât like that one. âYour readingâs improved a lot since we met. You could barely string two words on a page together then, and now look at you. Not long now until we finish this story.â
Elis blushes, looking down at the cat thatâs just jumped into his lap. Heâs still not used to compliments. And heâs not so good.
âHey, sweetheart. You really are getting good at reading. Youâre improving. Recovering. Iâm proud of you.â
Elis frowns. Colâs tone increases the bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. âCol?â
Col sighs. âI have a bad feeling. Itâs probably nothing more than the fact that Wulfricâs here, but... if something happens, ever, promise me youâll do whatever it takes to survive. And I donât just mean if itâs Wulfric.â
Elis nods vigorously. âI promise.â Heâs promised before, he has, and he doesnât think he needs to promise again no but Col needs it, Elis can tell.
âGood. And donât forget that SĂŚwin and I will always, always come for you. Iâm sure this feelingâs nothing, but I want you to remember that, sweetheart. All right?â Elis nods again, and Col pulls him into a tight hug, kissing the top of his head as Mabel scrambles away. âYouâre safe. Youâre going to stay safe, Iâm sure of it, sweetheart. Iâm sure.â
That doesnât reassure Elis one bit.
_
A few days later, Elis is standing at the edge of the field, watching the knights train. He knows it annoys the head knight when he does this and he doesnât like annoying people no but he canât stay home on his own, not even with Mabel. Thatâs what he usually does on days like this, when heâs unable to stay still but unable to make himself move without orders. He can usually stay with Mabel and itâs not too bad, but today is worse than usual for some reason (Wulfric, probably, who Elis hasnât seen again yet but even knowing heâs here is making him nervous), and he canât stay by himself. Canât stay with SĂŚwin either and get in the way of him saving people, he has to stay somewhere more out of the way. With Col. And even though people are annoyed Col says they just have to put up with it.
It seems an odd way to deal with Elis being an inconvenience.
Elis likes watching the knights, lots of young men and women do and if he lets himself become absorbed in the training he can almost pretend heâs normal, but today his attention keeps drifting. He canât focus on anything.
And then he freezes entirely.
Thereâs a familiar set of footsteps coming this way. One heavier than the other, slightly muffled by the boots heâs wearing. Dark brown leather boots with a fur lining and intricate patterns sewn into the outside that Elis can picture like heâs actually looking up at them when he closes his eyes.
Itâs Wulfric. Elisâ heart pounds. He couldnât flee even if he wanted to, heâs completely frozen, itâs a fight not to drop to his knees as his former master comes into view. Col inches closer to Elis under the guise of fetching water and murmurs, âGo home if you want to.â
But Elis canât.
He takes a shaky breath as Wulfric and King Leofric stop in front of the training field. The knights and spectators bow and curtsy as the King turns his attention to them.
âKnights of the realm. Lord Wulfric has requested to lead you all in a few drills, and I have agreed.â Surprised glances are shared around the group of knights - King Leofric is known for being possessive, he doesnât normally let anyone else do anything with his men - and the head knight looks indignant, before smoothing his expression over before the King can see. âI will be observing, of course.â
As Wulfric strides onto the field, taking the head knightâs place, Elis thinks his gaze lingers on him. But Col doesnât seem to have noticed, so please let him be wrong. Heâs just paranoid yes thatâs it. That must be it.
Elis is worried about what his body will do when Wulfric starts barking orders, but he canât do anything about that now. He curls his toes tightly inside his boots and clenches his fists. He can do this he can, and then Col will be there to help him after.
âShow me your guards,â calls Wulfric, and Elis grips his arms tightly. Thatâs not an order he knows well, luckily, but heâs just waiting for one he does.
âVery good. Now, show me your best move...â
He says more, but Elisâ mind goes blank. His best move is taking out the target. Master is looking at the head knight, and the weapon focuses on him, pinpointing the best targets, heâs wearing chainmail but thereâs still open targets. His eye maybe. The weapon starts to bend over and reach into his bootâ
âHalt!â
Something hits him and he falls to the ground with a thump, something heavy landing on top of him. He blinks, pushing his hands up, as the blankness slowly filters from his mind.
âElis. Elis itâs me, Col, youâre in Sorestan. Listen to me, Elis. Youâre Elis, remember?â
âCol,â breathes Elis, his memory and thoughts returning. âIâm Elis. Elis. Youâre Col.â
âThatâs it, sweetheart. Will you drop the dagger please?â
Elis lets his hand loosen and the dagger drops to the ground with a dull thud. He tangles his now-empty hand in Colâs chainmail to stop himself picking it back up automatically.
âI dropped it,â he whispers. Col rolls off him, pulling Elisâ hand off his chainmail gently and folding it in his own, helping Elis to his feet.
Elis nods shakily. Heâs okay, heâs okay, heâs not a weapon anymore. Col pulls him into a quick hug, kissing the top of his head.
âShhh.â
âYou!â
They both jump at the sound of Wulfricâs voice and Elis spins around to face him. He looks angry, glowering, and ohâ no no noâ
âYouâre my weapon, arenât you? I thought I recognised you. My little weapon, who ran away and hid from me. Or did he hide you?â
âI didnâtââ mutters Elis, backing away, nearly inaudible, âno no no no noââ
His voice breaks. He canât speak in front of his master, heâs not allowed to.
Col glances at him, squeezes his hand. âHe didnât run. You left him to die. He was nearly dead when we found him, youââ Colâs voice hardens, the way it always does when heâs trying to stop his emotions from showing, and Elis flinches, which he always does. âYou nearly killed him. He was bleeding out and about to burn to death, and you wouldâve known he couldnât move without your permission. Donât lie and pretend you care, you donât, you never have, youâre just regretting discarding of your best weapon.â He pulls Elis to him and squeezes him tight. âAnd youâre not having him. Never again, you abusive brute. Sir.â
Wulfricâs face has gone red, a vein popping in his temple. Elis shrinks, not moving, heâs not allowed no but his mind shrinks, hiding from his punishment.
âHow dare you insult me like that? I am Lord of Magance, far more important than the likes of you. Certainly more important than that.â He looks at Elis in disgust and draws his sword, slashing it downwards, oh gods heâs going to kill Col and thereâs nothing Elis can do, heâs not permitted to moveâ
Clang.
His masterâs sword is stopped inches from Colâs neck, pushing against... SĂŚwinâs. SĂŚwinâs? Whatâs SĂŚwin doing with a sword? Thereâs a low hum as the metal vibrates against each other.
âI donât often use a sword, but I suggest you stop trying to kill my family,â says SĂŚwin warningly, panting slightly. âTrust me, you donât want to be cut open by an expert in human anatomy.â
Wulfric scowls but he doesnât get a chance to retort as an authoritative royal voice rings out across the training ground.
âGuards! Arrest Lord Wulfric for attacking one of my knights.â
Wulfric is dragged away by guards, protesting at the top of his voice, and SĂŚwin drops the sword, turning to Elis and Col.
âAre you two all right?â
Col nods. âIâm well, thank you. That bastard just... got to me.â
âYou got to him too, Iâd say. Elis? What about you?â
Elis squeezes his eyes shut and nods. Itâs the best he can do.
âWell, Iâm not sure I believe either of you, I can hear that deliberate lack of emotions in your voice, Col, but... youâre both alive and in one piece. Thatâs something, at least.â Elis feels SĂŚwinâs arm snake his back, the physicianâs solid warmth shoring up his other side, and he feels more secure. Col and SĂŚwin wouldnât let anything happen to him.
Not if they could help it.
âThe guards have taken Wulfric away, Elis,â murmurs SĂŚwin, âyouâre safe now.â
Heâs safe. Safe safe safe safe safe.
So why doesnât he quite feel it?
_
In all the fuss and distraction as the three of them stand there, looking after each other, as the knightsâ training breaks up into murmurs and whispers and stares, as the head knight almost forgets to dismiss them in his discomfort, amidst all that, everyone misses the greedy, considering look the King gives Elis.
Looking him up and down like a sacrificial lamb at the next spring festival.
"All clear!" Col yells, exiting the cottage, damp cloth mask muffling his voice slightly. The wildfire's nearing him now and he's already covered in sweat and soot, smoke pricking at his eyes, but they need to finish checking these streets. They don't know exactly how many people live here and if they don't know that, they can't make sure everyone's evacuated.
'They' being Col and the guards from his estate. Because King Leofric couldn't spare any men, but this village is on Col's land, he had to go. Leofric could see that.
Or he will, anyway, once he finds out. Col's sure of it.
"Found a child!" shouts a guard, and Col looks to see him helping a young teenager out of a cottage. "You can walk?" She nods. "Go and see that man over there, he'll give you something for those burns."
SĂŚwin waves at the teenager and she walks hesitantly over to him. Col can't help a small smile.
His guards, and SĂŚwin. Of course SĂŚwin came. He would never have let Col go alone.
There's just the inn to go, and Col bursts in, fully expecting not to find anyone there. The flames are starting to lick at it, it's about to go up.
The patron area seems deserted, and Col calls, "Hello? Anyone here? You need to leave now, if you are."
No-one answers.
There's a creak from behind the bar and Col approaches cautiously, wary of the wooden building that's about to fall down around him. It's probably just the walls but he needs to check there anyway. The area's probably empty â there's so much smoke, and Col drops, crawling along in the clearer air.
It's not empty behind the bar.
There's a young man sitting in the far corner, cross-legged, stroking a black and white cat compulsively.
"Hey. You need to leave."
The young man snaps his gaze up to Col, eyes wide and scared in his soot-stained face. He doesn't make an attempt to move, but his hand stills on the cat. He almost looks like a statue.
"Can you understand me? Just... I don't know, nod or blink once if you do." The young man blinks. "Right. Good. This building's going to come down any minute, we have to leave now. You'll die if you don't move, and so will that cat. And me."
The young man just looks even more scared, but he's becoming obscured by smoke now. Guilt-tripping isn't working. The thought occurs to Col that maybe he simply can't move.
"Right. I'm going to carry you. And no arguments, we don't have time. Just keep a tight hold of that cat."
Col crawls over to the man and up into a crouch. He smiles reassuringly and lifts the young man into his arms, then stands, bent over to keep himself as low as possible.
The man is light. Very light. Far too light, even accounting for how small he is. Col hurries towards the exit, breaking into a run as he catches a glimpse of the fire breaking through into the main room of the inn behind him. He pushes through the door and out just as it starts to crumble. Flames are licking the roof now, it's reaching the store rooms. He backs away hurriedly, still watching. There's so much alcohol in there.
"Everyone back!" he yells. "She's gonnaâ"
There's an almighty boom and the inn explodes into shards of wood, metal and glass. Col dives for the floor, covering the man and cat in his arms as debris rains down around them.
Once the rain has stopped and all he can hear is the crackle of burning wood, he sits up, coughing heavily. Someone tugs at his arm.
"Col? Col, we need to move back so they can finish making the firebreak. Can you hear me?"
Col nods and picks up the man again, stumbling after SĂŚwin. Fuck, that smoke wasn't good. It stings in his eyes and it's stuffing up his lungs. As soon as they make it to the treeline he deposits the young man by SĂŚwin's medical kit, sitting down against a fallen branch beside him. The other rescued villagers are a small distance away, helping with the firebreak or simply giving SĂŚwin space to work.
"Where are you injured?" asks SĂŚwin urgently.
Col frowns. "I'm not. I meanâ I inhaled some smoke, but..."
"Your hands are covered in blood! And so are those cat's paws!"
"It's not mine. It's definitely not mine, SĂŚwin." He looks from the red-splattered cat licking itself on the grass to the unconscious young man, dread filling him. Please, please no.
SĂŚwin follows his gaze.
The man's tunic, a dirty blue when Col first saw it, has a growing patch of dark red near his abdomen.

Anita. She works in an animal sanctuary and animals love her (a lot of the other workers get jealous!)
If the question was about cats specifically, though, that would be Elis. He doesn't quite understand why but they love him so much.
đŞ Which of your ocs gets the least sleep?
Hmm... either Phoenix or Lucan, probably. Phoenix has a lot to do and is often in pain from healing or punishments so they don't really sleep well, and Lucan's often not allowed to sleep. He's supposed to be available whenever Caroline wants him, and Caroline fairly often doesn't let him sleep for various reasons. Even when he comes to live with Sam it's ingrained in him not to sleep in case his 'new owner' wants something. He's too scared to let his guard down enough to do more than lightly doze.
Of course, if you asked on a day when Sam's hyperfixations were at their height you might get a different answer...
