Elberta, Utah. March 2021.
I went to a partial replica of Stonehenge, it's called Bamahenge.
Elberta, Michigan, Part One
When viewing google maps recently, I was attracted to what appeared to be a remnant of a roundhouse in a small lakeside town in Michigan. As it turned out, a blast furnace occupied the site prior to that of the railroad, and a significant relic still remains (top image above).
The blast furnace operated from 1867 to 1883. Meanwhile, the Toledo, Ann Arbor and Northern Michigan Railway was drawn into the area by 1870. Several years after the furnace was shuttered, in 1892, the railway took over the property and converted it to their needs, including the roundhouse.
Also at this site, the railroad loaded rolling stock onto Michigan Lake car ferries, bound for Wisconsin and other sites. One can see, on the USGS map as well as the satellite view (the second and third photos above), where two slips existed. An historical Life Saving Station has been moved onto the grounds, but that is deserving of a separate post.
The final picture shows a close up of the seawall where it has been fortified with a length of rail. Two images by Richard Koenig; taken July 1st 2019.

July 1978, Elberta, MI. Ann Arbor S3 10 loads cars on to the Viking as the Arthur K. Atkinson sits in Betsie Bay laid up with a bent crankshaft. This scene of loading ferries lasted just another year when ferry service was ended on the Ann Arbor. Unfortunately, everything in this shot has been either pulled up or scrapped, and the yard turned into a park. 35mm slide from my collection, photo by Jim Crosby. Special thanks to Bob Edmonson for his insight and experience at this location around the time of this photo on the disposition of the AKA to help describe the scene. Kyle Korienek Collection.
Tipsy!
Glorious colors at the Elberta, Michigan beach last night - just before sunset.
