The momentum that had taken Gawain into the house seemed to slow somewhere in the sitting room. Everywhere he looked, he thought, was it here? Was it here? He knew it must be agony for Clem and Percy, knowing exactly what had happened and where it had happened. But not knowing was not painless; it sent his imagination into overdrive.Â
He drifted to the kitchen and made himself a cup of coffee, the movements automatic and thoughtless. He stepped out to find his twin in the hallway, nearly spilling his coffee in surprise. Gawain muttered a curse and cleaned it with a spell. It felt stupid, now, to have made himself a drink — a vestigial choice from a past life. Looking at it turned his stomach. He wanted to spell it over to the sink, or to go there and throw it out, but once more he felt rooted to the spot. He hadn’t been able to say the right thing to Clem, and he geared himself up for a pale shadow of a conversation once more. What came out instead was, “I’m sorry.” It was barely a mumble, and he felt even worse for having said it.
