Jack sat at his dining table, feeling pleased with his new invention. He scanned the room, waving around his prototype Fenton Ghoul-Glass, searching for spectral activity (albeit not expecting much.)
Danny walked into the kitchen, sending his dad a questioning glance. Jack beamed at him, launching right into an explanation.
As he pointed the glass to look at Danny, though, the words died in his throat.
For where his son should have been, stood the Phantom of Amity Park.

~Well, here we go again, good old Ghost Hunger AU~
Description: The Ghost Zone is inherently a violent place. You can hunt or be hunted, there is no other options. However, for some reason the Halfa does not understand what is happening. And no one rushes to explain it. NB! ghost cannibalism is mentioned.

Suppose thereâs a conventional division among ghosts. Some of them are potential predators capable of hunting their own kind, while others are only able to absorb the surrounding energy and therefore build up power more slowly than hunters.
So, predation is used as a method of survival in poor ectoplasm areas of the Ghost Zone, less often as a means of gaining power. Even less often hunters are created.
It is obvious that the appearance of a hunter who is the son of human ghost hunters in a haunting place without stable sources of ectolasm has caused panic in the society of the dead ones. For the newly formed ghost to have ectoblasts, fangs or ghost sense is a rarity and great luck. So the newcomer had everything and more to be a serious threat. An awful danger for the surrounding spiritsâŚRight?
But Danny doesnât know the specifics of his new biology ectology!
Even though heâs a hunter, heâs never had a ghost hunger. Probably because thanks to his parents he has an amazing ectoplasm concentrator in the basement.
Soon everyone understands that the boy does not attack first. Those who return through the portal never report any losses at all. He does not bite or attempt to capture cores of other spirits. At first, the ghosts think it's a trap. Smart enough for a beginner. Not everyone has the tenacity to pretend to be an idiot to get close to them. But the Phantom never feeds on them. HeâsâŚsafe?
Whatâs more, Danny seems to think theyâre a threat to the city. Which is fun and weird. Normally, there is no competition for feeding using human emotion. But the owner of the lair did not like the smell of fear in the air. Is this ghost broken?
When the ghosts who visit Amity realize that the halfa does not know that he can hunt them, rather than just guard his territory...Well, it explains a lot. Everyone agrees not to explain the situation to the boy so that the city behind the portal remains a relatively safe haven during the during a "hunting season" and other troubles in the Infinite Realms.
~~~~~
The problem arises when Phantom begins exploring the Ghost Zone. What if the other hunters make the boy stop being a freak?
In addition, more experienced ghosts may well attack the careless halfa. And Amity Park under the control of a more predatory spirit would be a terrible outcome. Most dead ones near the portal are used to the fact that the area before Wisconsin is open to travel and migration without the threat of being eaten.
All rational ghosts try to avoid the territory of hunters. If you canât defend yourself, thereâs too much risk of being a free meal. Itâs much safer to settle down with spirits with similar energy levels at door clusters. If the hunter does not purposefully show up at your lair, you will have a much better chance of keeping the afterlife.
Those of the Ancients who have won their position and those of them who were created for it have become accustomed to isolation. Although all the Ancients have lost the need to eat 'cause they have absorbed enough energy, legends about their past are still be nightmares for all spirits. Just because they donât need to eat other ones doesnât mean they wonât. It is clear that a weaker hunter can also be hunted. No reason to risk.
Therefore, how freely and fearlessly Phantom communicates with Frostbite, Clockwork or Pandora is puzzling. Does he feel threatened at all?
The Ancients find this experience refreshing. Lil communication without fear makes them feel sympathy for this youngling. Danny is always glad of their company. And the boy is not afraid to express his opinion. It is strange but...pleasant?
Their minions from time to time complain that they teach a potential enemy but it is very difficult to see a possible rival in Phantom. Danny is always in trouble. The youngster is silly and careless. Like a wet kitten that canât even make a threatening hiss. So Ancients, to their own surprise, don't mind helping him. Why isnât his naivety annoying?
For example, Frostbiteâs trying to teach Danny hunting and tracking techniques because he thinks the little cub doesnât know how to be what he supposed to be. Meanwhile Danny sees his attempts as a course of self-defense that he can use against ghosts who try to infiltrate his city.
~~~~~Bonus~~~~~
Some insufficiently powerful ghosts mimic predators to scare away dangerous spirits and protect themselves.
Skulker is quite pleased that he managed to deceive halfa:

Dean thinks Amity Park could be a cute, idyllic city if it wasn't haunted.
And by haunted, he means that metaphorically and literally. Nothing he can do about the first thing, but the second? Well, here's hoping him and Sam don't go breaking their streak on such a straightforward case.Â

âIâm guessing that you died, but then came back somehow.âÂ
Jason wanted to deny it, but something stopped him.Â
The same thing happened to me.
It wasnât possible. He had gone through a very specific set of experiences. They didnât even know what brought him back originally!
But maybe⌠Maybe this kid knew.
âWhat do you mean?â
The kid gave him what looked like a sad smile. âWhen I was fourteen, I was in an accident. It killed me, but at the same time I was brought back to life. Now, I donât know exactly what happened to you, but I can tell that youâve also died and come back.â
âIâm alive though.â He had to be.Â
âMostly. Youâre more alive than me at least. Iâm half dead, and youâre more like one-fourth dead. If I had to guess, Iâd say youâre a revenantâ a spirit who came back to its body. Not that the GIW will care.â
âThatâs the second time youâve mentioned them. Who exactly are they? You said theyâre part of the government, but Iâve never heard about them before.â
âThatâs because theyâre a secret branch of the government.â
Jason raised an eyebrow.
Danny rolled his eyes. âThey were formed to hunt down, experiment on, and exterminate all ectoplasmic beings. Like ghosts.â
âBut how does that not go against the Meta Protection Act?â
Danny shrugged. âThe government classifies any being that produces or needs ectoplasm to survive as non sentient and non sapient. They also say we canât feel pain, which is a load of bull, but whatever.â
âThat doesn't even make any sense.â
Danny shrugged, sipping at his hot chocolate. âIt is what it is. Now Iâve got to head out. Iâve been here long enough. Youâve been really helpful and I wouldnât want to bring trouble to your doorstep.â
Danny started to get up.
âWait! What if⌠What if I told you that I know someone who can help?â
âHelp with what?â
âHelp protect you from the GIW and take them down too.â
Danny looked skeptical. âAnd who would do that?â
Jason hesitated. âI have connections to the Justice League.â
Jason hadnât exactly known what reaction to expect, maybe surprise or disbelief, but definitely not the sneer Danny gave him.
âThose sanctimonious pricks wonât lift a finger to help.â
And wow, Jason never thought heâd be defending the Justice League but⌠âI know they have their issues, but they can help you.â
âThey didnât before, so why would they now?â
âWhat do you mean?â
Danny sighed, but sat back down. âWhen my town first got invaded by ghostsââ
âWhat!â
âWe tried calling the JL. Several times! But they never answered. Even as the town was getting destroyed, even when we got pulled into the feakinâ Ghost Zone, they never responded.â
Jason frowned. âLook, Iâm usually not one to defend the JL, but that doesnât really seem like them. But all I want to say is that regardless of what theyâve done or not done, I know one of the members who for sure would help you out.â And heâd probably adopt you too, Jason thought, looking at this kid who was prime adoption bait.
âAnd who would that be?â
Jason was about to respond when Danny stiffened, his head tilted to the side.
âTheyâre here.â Danny turned to him. âIâll try to lead them away, but I recommend laying low for a while. Youâve got something weird going on and your ectoplasm hasnât yet fully integrated. Iâd hate it if the GIW caught you before you really had a chance to live again.â Danny smiled sadly. âHope to see you again, Jason. Take care of yourself.â
âKid, waitââ Jason started, but suddenly he was alone in his kitchen. The only sign that anyone had been there, a dirty mug on the table and some bloody bandages in the trash can.
