Whoops you tagged me In a post that's not there anymore :) sorry I didn't get to see it. I really wish tumblr mobile would notify me of these things.
Weird. I don't know where it could've gone. I didn't delete anything. Tumblr is such shit sometimes.

it’s interesting to see how many in my family did this, and how many didn’t. a lot of the people who came to america 30+ years ago changed their names slightly. even my last name is spelled differently with latin characters than it was in lebanon.

People think I do that when I say my name is Jasmine and they hear I’m from Tunisia, but my parents did a thing; in the UK I’m registered as Jasmine and in Tunisia they registered me as Yesmine.
My better half's parents did something similar with their kids. They gave them English first names (which the rest of the family 'back home' can't pronounce easily) and Spanish middle names.
It's interesting to see how immigrants deal with the power dynamics involved in covertly enforced assimilation tactics.
I was talking to the now husband of a dear friend and told him a name I wanted to name my kid if we should ever have some. With a straight face, he replied: "Well, why don't you give them a normal name." His wife, my partner, and myself went into a quick yet firm discussion on who defines 'normal', what is 'normal', and where and to whom 'normal' applies...
My cousin, a speech therapist, is frequently asked if she has a nickname for her name. She tells them that she doesn't and, especially with the sounds in her name all being available and native to English, that they just need to learn how to say it.
A good friend of mine works in a children's nursery, where the kids call her by her first name, Zaynah, preceded by 'miss' all the time. Yet all the teachers refuse to use her first name. They each give her their own nickname or find creative ways to avoid using her name all together.
I don't get it. If other languages have to learn how to pronounce Gwen, Michael, Meredith, David, Victoria, Nigel, etc. Why can't our names be learned by the English tongue? It doesn't need to be exactly spoken, especially if the phonology is that different, but English speakers are not even expected to try!
That's the crux of the issue for me. English is so privileged that its speakers aren't even expected to try. Someone actually told me "it's too tough for them to say it" !!!
I looked up "bear lawyer"

What’s the occasion?
Just going to the beach with my cousins. I was requested to wear a dress.

black. But add a punch of color with your shoes or bag
I'm wearing that Hot Plum lipstick and my earrings are these teeny teal flowers. I'll probably wear nude sandals.
themagpielife replied to your post: Black or yellow?
Black, but that’s mostly because I love a good sheer cardi.
Same! And I've had this one for a while, but I haven't had a chance to wear it yet.
jenstansfield replied to your post: Black or yellow?
Both are cute but I like the yellow because it’s so summer!
I know! I wore it with the yellow one when I went out to do errands with Mama J and it was so cute!
velocipedestrienne replied to your post: Black or yellow?
I actually love the pattern on the black one!! So cute
It's really pretty, and I'm such a sucker for lace
(Also, lace in the summer is awesome; it's like built in air conditioning)
