I have long struggled with how to accurately translate Edo Phoenix’s specific use of ‘senpai’ to refer to Kaiser Ryo in episode 57.
Crunchyroll uses ‘predecessor’ which I’m not fond of, because it doesn’t make sense in the context of the pro leagues (edo’s stomping ground, not ryo’s) and it doesn’t make sense in the duel academia context, because edo isn’t publicly a student at duel academia yet.
I would consider ‘upperclassmen’ but, see above duel academia reasoning. It’s accurate, perhaps, but not ideal because it doesn’t make diegetic sense.
To come to a conclusion on this, we must examine his intent. The word ‘senpai’ can be used in several contexts. I believe Edo is using it against Ryo in his pseudo-polite way, as a dig at Ryo being older than he is. He’s doing the equivalent of batting his eyes at a woman in her 20’s and saying, “wow, I’m so glad you came out clubbing at your age!”
It sounds sincere, respectful, and friendly, but we all know it’s not. It’s laden with the implication of being too old to be out, being late to the punch, and an inherent shame is carried with it.
