A more somber addition to the Literary Locations series: JRR Tolkien's grave in Wolvercote Cemetery, just north of Oxford.
The writer is buried here with his wife Edith Mary Tolkien, née Bratt. The names Lúthien and Beren, two characters from Tolkien's stories, are engraved on the tombstone. The couple was married for over 50 years and enjoyed a rather unusual courtship, which was interrupted for a few years by Tolkien's guardian, who believed that Edith was a distraction from his studies and forbade Tolkien to speak to her until the day he came of age. Tolkien followed his guardian's instructions to the letter, writing to Edith on the eve of his 21st birthday - after years of silence and just in time to interrupt her engagement with another man.
