Oof. This is going to hit hard.
Upd. IT DID. Gods. I'm shaking.
First of all, I rarely want to beat someone's face up but Morrison is asking for it. Gods I hate him. The worst thing? He's VERY realistic. That's why he pisses me off so much. This. Damn. Arrogant. Jerk. I hope he gets killed. I REALLY hope so!
Secondly. I desperately wanted to give Bill a hug for the most of the episode. He finally broke down, bad. Punched a wall. I know this type of frustration, of being so angry at yourself and powerless at the same time because the mistake or mistakes are already done, it's in the past, and it can't be changed.
After all, he had it worse than anyone else from the team. He was hiding Sam and had to hide this not just from Morrison, but from Robert as well. No one could know. It's painfully obvious how his personal relationship suffered from this, and he didn't do anything bad, he was literally saving a life.
And here it came to the point when Robert couldn't bear it any longer. He saw the state his love was in, how he was being torn apart inside and suffering but still keeping silent. This night though it breached any limits, Bill literally told Rob to go away because he had to let his rage out, to put his thoughts in order, and you normally NEED to be on your own for that, but Bill couldn't explain any of that because he had to keep Sam a secret, and that meant keeping everything else a secret, too!
The way he TRIED to push something out to explain as much as it was possible but there was just nothing, so he cut himself mid-sentence several times was painful to hear. It's dark in the room but I still had to hide my face in my palm because. It's just. It's insufferable.
And familiar. When you're demanded to tell something - righteously so - but you can't, because it's someone else's personal information so you can't disclose it and have to dance around inventing ways to find what you can tell while keeping out what you can't⌠yeah it's hard and I hate it. Especially with an added "don't talk about it this topic is still painful for me" and then being interrogated about this exact topic but I can't even say that because I'm not allowed to talk about it?? And Bill had it so much worse. Just. Buddy. You deserve the world. And one much better than the one you live in.
Apparently Rob noticed something specific because he went from being offended to talking soothingly and reasonably, explained how all this made him feel, and what will most likely happen if they go on like this. It felt a bit like pressuring and threatening to leave if Bill still kept everything a secret, but at the same time he was just laying out the way he felt and warned of what would follow. He was simply being honest - and in a careful enough way.
So Bill broke and told him everything.
The episode has a CW "character betrayal" and I prayed that it isn't Robert's. That he's not the traitor.
I let such a deep sigh of relief out at the end. He's just a good partner, like Bill is just a good person.
And when he was telling Bill about why he wanted to know, and how he didn't need Bill to be a superhuman, how he wanted him to just be present, all of him, the good with the bad - I think I forgot for a moment to whom it was addressed. I just listened. And it was very calming.
If Bill looks like a saint, Robert seems to be his angel. I don't know how else to explain it.
Then I had to cover my face with my hand once again because when Rob asked Bill to get something at the groceries, Bill apparently went straight to Morrison.
Y'know, the VERY thing others asked him NOT to do?

Bill, dear, you're probably one of the best people of all the podcast characters I know but you really did a BIG mistake and it was painfully obvious.
But the way Morrison told he can do anything he wants⌠I think I may be more emotional about it because of the situation in my country for the past few years. He sounds just like them. He knows he can get away with anything and he doesn't care if there is "colloteral damage".
And you should hear the way he said all that.

Also insane kudos to the voice actor, he's something else for real. They all are, actually.
What a rollercoaster of an episode. I'm going to need some time to calm down after this.
This abusive work relationship is really a heavy topic. Morrison uses all the usual tactics, and Bill doesn't really buy into any of them except for one last and worst thing - hope that things may change if he tries hard enough, shows another way.
I was listening to Dr. Ramani's lectures about narcissism, but I think a lot of what she was saying can apply to other situations as well. Or Morrison is narcissistic, why not, he certainly believes he's exceptional and has some other traits. And she says hope is the cornerstone of such relationship. Because it isn't always bad - there are really great moments, even when mostly it's bleak and painful. So the person keeps making excuses for the other party and keeps hoping those good moments come again and become something more. That it will get better. Thing is, it doesn't. There are just enough of those moments to get one on the hook. And compassion, empathy are going to play against one when they are in a relationship with a narcissistic or just abusive person - understanding how the other party became the way they did won't change anything either unless this party wants and actually tries their best at it themselves. Which is rarely the case.
Bill believes Morrison does his best for the town, the county, the people - Bill believes Morrison is actually a great person, just under a lot of pressure, had a misstep, it's only this one time, he's just a bit misguided⌠and you know what, he may be right. Morrison did get turned by some unfortunate experience in his past and wanted to keep those supernatural things away from people ever since. But the spirit was right in calling this something like "a self-righteous crusade". Morrison crossed some lines that should never be crossed, and the fact that all that was forgiven didn't do him any good. He's went off the path in trying to reach his - rather a good one on itself - aim and should be stopped, and brought to his senses. While having some compassion and understanding for him, I really hope he pays his dues in the future. I may have compassion, but not mercy for him.
Ned a.k.a. De Witt doesn't suffer from conscience using others like this, but still, this is wrong. He's not doing this out of free will. And while he's always been shady and on his own side, so he can't be trusted most the time, he still helped Sam. Sure, because De Witt gained his own merit from that, too, but⌠it feels like he can be trusted in SOME cases, when it's really necessary, and I can't help liking him anyway. Damn. That's not even the question here. What Morrison is doing is WRONG, full stop. This is cruel. And I suspect Ren works with him, too⌠now this is painful, they used to be friends with Anna⌠It's still possible it's the "this isn't what it looks like" situation and Morrison had to, but⌠he didn't need to kill Sam, and he still gave the order. So I wouldn't hope for that much. Gods this man makes me sick. đŤ˘
UPD I've read the script and Morrison actually is trying to close whatever rift Sam accidentally opened back in April, and uses whatever comes out of it, De Witt included. He despises them all and doesn't hide it:
DW: Iâll get you your results. Not like youâve given me much of a choice.
M: [Chuckles darkly] No. I havenât. More of a choice than I gave your fellow monsters, though. Canât ignore that.
DW: So. Youâve got me here. Youâve got your creatures in their cages, and more on the way. Happy now?
M:Â I wonât be âhappyâ until you close this door for good, and the only monster I have to deal with is you. Now get back in that chair and try again.
[De Witt scoffs, but turns and climbs into the chair anyway]
[Morrison begins to tighten the restraints]
Did I say this man makes me sick? Well, I'll repeat. I think I'm starting to hate him.
The aim is good, but the means are unacceptable.
I think I need to make a separate post on Bill because... I GET it. He sees some really weird shit going on in the county, and he wants to keep everyone safe. As much as he can - he's very much aware he's just a guy and can't do much on his own. He's been working with Morrison for quite a while as it seems. Morrison, on the opposite, DOES have power, knowledge, experience and money to deal with both supernatural and natural cases. Bill really thinks high of him, as it looks to me, and he has reasons for that.
But because of that he closes his eyes to a lot of shady things Morrison does.
Kate: It means that you need to stop making excuses for everyone! For all the shit you let slide! First you donât quit when Morrison tells you to kill your own partner and now youâre making excuses for Ned cracking a bartenderâs skull? Out of nowhere, for no reason?
Bill: Kate please, it isnât â
K: It isnât what? You clearly donât trust him, not half as much as you pretend to. And if you donât even realize that⌠Well, I donât know what to do with you.
B: Heâs my partner, Kate. I have to trust him.
K: Stop making excuses! You work with a needlessly violent man for a needlessly violent man, and that means I canât trust you to be any better than the two of them. Not until you wise up.
Bill's hands are tied. If he doesn't comply with Morrison, there's no one to deal with all the supernatural shit going on, and after the April clusterfuck it seems all hell broke loose in Oslow.
If Bill doesn't trust his partner - he doesn't, btw, not as much as he wants others and himself to think - how is he supposed to work? They are supposed to have each other's backs, with current situation especially.
Besides, there's always this underlying "there has to be an explanation, maybe I just don't know smth and this isn't as bad as it seems". This is painfully familiar to me. Bill tries his best not to jump to conclusions and often ends up giving too much credit to people who shouldn't really have it.
I think Bill is the idealist who still believes a police officer is someone who's job is to keep people safe. He breaks the rules only when he sees they are going against the very things they are supposed to work for. Killing Sam was against the rules - he wasn't dangerous, he wasn't even an outlaw, he just found himself in a situation, and Bill knew a bit about it. Bill is supposed to protect people, care for them, not blindly follow orders from people who are supposed to know better. So he goes against the order and hides Sam.
And now his world is coming apart. His boss seems to be a merciless monster and a mastermind pulling the strings Bill wasn't aware of, his new partner is just another kind of some weird entity AND was working with Morrison all along... Bill can't trust the very people who are the foundation of his job, of his calling. His on his own now, with no one to trust but Maria and Sam. And damn this is tragic.
I know naivety can be lethal and is considered to be a bad thing, but the world needs people who genuinely care and see the best in others. Doesn't deserve, but really-really needs. And it's soul-crashing to witness one of them, even fictional - fiction is based on real life one way or another after all - to have his beliefs destroyed like that.
This is probably personal for me. I remember the feeling, and I wasn't half as good. It feels so unfair, so unjust.
Kate is right that he needs to wise up, but this is still sad.
I think Bill needs a good vacation after all this. He's too good of a person to be mixed up in such stuff and I think the only one in the cast who deserves to have him as anyone at all, as a friend in this case, is Sam. And Robert since he's still putting up with his boyfriend's stubborn desire to think of some people better than they deserve. I think he's the true miracle of this supernatural story đ
