Above the table, a crystal chandelier glistens, refracting light off the silverware and the diamond in the centre of Chrissie’s engagement ring. It’s beautiful, an ostentatious show of grandeur that perfectly sums up the vibe of the restaurant, and yet all Robert can wonder as he stares up at the thing is whether or not it’d be sturdy enough for him to hang himself from.  Chrissie’s hand squeezes his thigh as she speaks, and Robert hopes she’s not about to ask for his input because he hasn’t taken in a single word she’s said since, “Oh, I’ve missed you so much, Aaron.” Robert’s gaze had snapped from his phone to the person with their arms wrapped around his fiancee in greeting, and, lo and behold, Aaron’s eyes were already on him, dark and narrowed. In her defence, it’s entirely possible that Chrissie had told him Aaron would be here — and even if not, Robert probably should’ve figured — but he still feels betrayal like a twisted knife in his back, blindsided by his lack of preparation to spend the evening with her brother. It’s the first time Robert’s seen him since the last time they had sex. He’d rather hoped their reunion would involve less awkward dinner conversation and more hot and sweaty fucking — and a distinct absence of Chrissie and the charming, wonderful tosser that is Ed Roberts would’ve been nice — but he’s not about to let those things stop him from getting what he wants.

Every January 23 marks Ed Roberts Day, named for the “Father of Independent Living” Ed Roberts. Roberts was a trailblazing advocate for people with disabilities.

Paralyzed by polio as a child, Roberts was considered "unemployable” by the California Department of Rehabilitation, a prejudiced decision he successfully fought to overturn. Roberts was the first UC Berkeley student with significantly limiting disabilities and earned his Masters in Political Science. A decade after graduation, Roberts became head of the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation and, after two terms under Gov. Jerry Brown, spent the rest of his life running the World Institute on Disability — the first non-profit dedicated to the development and advancement of a unified body of public policy on disability issues.

The Ed Roberts Campus in South Berkeley was built shortly after Roberts' death and commemorates his many contributions to the fight for disability rights. The Center features fully accessible meeting rooms, a computer/media resource center, a fitness center, a cafe, and a child development center.
