Everyone is talking about pollution nowadays- air pollution, sound pollution, water pollution, etc. But I think the root cause of all this ...
But I think the root cause of all this pollution is mental pollution. Man has become so greedy and so selfish and cannot think beyond i , me and mine.what is the root cause of this short-sighted vision of man? There are many problems on the planet today but the root cause is lack of spiritual awakening. in the name of secularism nothing spiritual is taught in our schools and colleges.
Creating University Startup Ecosystems
Blogpost by: Inês Santos Silva - Co-Founder of Startup Pirates
Tim Draper, legendary VC from Silicon Valley, once said “Without Stanford, Silicon Valley wouldn’t exist”.
There is no doubt that universities are one of the most important players of any startup ecosystem. They are the primary source of talent, innovation and new technologies, but nonetheless, their level of engagement in the startup ecosystems various a lot.
Over the years, I’ve been privileged to have front row seats to the great work the University of Porto has been doing to grow and support the local startup ecosystem. Very early on, a long time before startups were sexy, the University of Porto understood the importance of promoting and facilitating entrepreneurship, supporting entrepreneurs and building an environment of collaboration. Today, the university of Porto has the biggest incubator in Portugal, with space for more than 350 startups, houses some of the most innovative startups in Europe and has a massive regional influence.
Based on my experience working with the University of Porto and many other universities around Europe, here are 5 things every university should do to grow a university startup ecosystem:
1. Incorporate entrepreneurship in the various subjects, particularly within scientific and technical studies, in order to provide students with specific training on how to start and run a business;
2. Make sure the teachers get initial and in-service training as well as practical experience. Most of the times, teachers training is overlooked, but it’s crucial for the success of the entrepreneurship courses;
3. Build an environment where student-lead organizations have the space and the support to develop their own activities. Make sure this organizations feel engaged and appreciated and there is a directly line of communication between the university and them;
4. Engage the local community, especially businesses, and make sure they cooperate on the subject of entrepreneurship training.
5. Promote national and international cooperations with other universities and institutions to facilitate the exchange of best practices but also to build bridges with international players that can later be used by the local startups.
Building a successful University Startup Ecosystems takes a long time and there isn’t a formula to follow. It’s above all about engaging with the different players and be open to constant feedback. Universities should thrive to build startup ecosystems, but knowing that their work will only show results in the long run.
