I sadly donāt have much for this prompt because everyone in Ecnesse more or less speaks the same language.Ā
The language spoken in this world is shared by all. They call it Rea, though it is sort of translated into english in the comic. The reason for this is because the portal that allowed them to enter this world appeared in one place in their world, a city called Gisha. Because only a small portion of that world made it into Ecnesse before the portal closed much of their culture was lost. The majority spoke one language, and while there were few who spoke other languages those languages were soon forgotten.
In some places in the world there are carvings and other artifacts with strange words that no one can understand any longer because they are written in lost languages by the few who did not originally speak Rea.
The people of Kaldonea have an accent similar to an Irish accent. Their words tend to run together and lilt upwards in tone, and the sound of it feels very light. The accent broadens especially in the country where there are a lot more colloquialisms and slang that are harder to understand if you didnāt grow up hearing it. In the city the accent isnāt as thick.
In Tursia their consonants are sharp and hard and their vowels short. They tend not to pronounce the ārā unless it is at the beginning of a sentence. In the country they are much more loose sounding and almost lazy in that they drop off the āsā at the end of words that arenāt pluralized.

The focus of this story is to find a mythical special gem/key/magical item supposedly bestowed with powers. It is an item of legend that the heroes must journey to find. What they donāt realize at the start of their quest is that the item they are seeking is actually a symbol for inner peace. So, in pure irony, they are searching for inner peace. Inner peace can only truly come from one place, and that is God.
God is, in this story, the ever powerful force of life on Ecnesse. He comes from the depths of the earth, breathing energy into his creation. He is Triune, meaning he has three āparts,ā the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Father, or the Creator, is symbolized by a great white and powerful noble beast that doesnāt exist in this world; a bear. (Not a polar bear. More like an albino grizzly.) The Son, or the Word, is symbolized as a great white buck. The Holy Spirit, which permeates from the ground and is seen as the source of life energy, is symbolized as a wise white owl.
Ecnesse has churches and places of worship for many different religions, but very few know of the truth of this worldās creator.
The Tursians have set up an entire polytheistic religion complete with hundreds of different deities (much like the greeks.) They believe that if they please the gods then their lives will be blessed. According to their religion Ecnesse was created by the lightning god Ore who sits at the core of the world giving life and also taking life away. He has minions who act as grim reapers, guiding the dead to the land of Ho-min, their version of the afterlife. Because of the association with lightning it is believed that those born with lightning based abilities are either the offspring of the gods or are blessed by them.
Evil, according to Tursian religion, is anything that disobeys the laws of the gods. Religion is taken very seriously in Tursia and it is very well respected. There are temples and public buildings of worship set up all over the place. Generally to the poorer public religion is seen as having to do with being lucky. If you please the gods youāll have a good harvest this year, or if you had a good harvest the gods have blessed you etc.
In Kaldonea people generally fall into two camps. There are the pantheists, and there are the ruddy town folk who drink their beers and donāt give a hoot about spirituality. But there is a general belief in pantheism that affects their traditions, superstitions, and habits. They believe that the world is all one big organism and everyone in it is a part of it. Every living and nonliving thing is, or is a part of, god, and therefore everything is of equal importance. There are varying levels of intensity. Some just generally believe itās best not to disturb nature and leave it at that. Others refuse to eat meat, perform rites and rituals weekly to cleanse themselves and the land, etc. It really depends on the region.
The code of law that they follow is very similar to Tursians, but is said to be laws of the earth and of balance as opposed to laws given by the gods.
Kaldonea and Tursia are run under nearly identical governmental systems. This is due to being formed at the same time by people who aligned themselves with one another. Their system is a monarchy, but it differs from the traditional sense of a monarchy in that it doesnāt differentiate between male and female rulers. Without discrimination the right to rule goes to whoever is born with the mark. Most of the time itās a male, but sometimes itās a woman, and no one really cares. If the kid has the mark then theyāve got what it takes. At this point in time, however, the mark hasnāt been seen in centuries. So, the right to rule goes to the first born regardless of gender.
Aside from a few cultural differences in the understanding of the system, the only real difference between the two nations is what they decide to call the āking.ā In Tursia their ruler is called the Shi-Hai and wears a long silver embossed robe and golden hair piece to formal gatherings and rites. In Kaldonea the ruler is called the Valora and wears a crown made of beautiful and rough stones held together in intricate patterns by silver wire, as well as a special tasseled belt embroidered with bright colors that holds the scabbard of a ceremonial sword.
In Tursia the Shi-Hai is accompanied by a high council of advisors who carry a lot more decision making weight than they do in Kaldonea. Their governments are structurally identical, but in reality have very different expectations and practices. As far as the law is concerned, the King of Tursia holds full control and final word on everything. However, the reality is that behind closed doors the councilās power nearly equals the kingās, and every once in awhile they throw their weight to one side to dismantle the kingās decisions. Every once in awhile when the king takes his power for granted too much they end with a Caesar situation (where the king finds himself stabbed to death due to abuse of power.) The Tursian council, due to shared interest and self preservation as well as an unspoken agreement, work together like a well oiled machine. In Kaldonea this happens less often because the council is far too divided by their personal interests in opinion to pull together against a decision.
Tursia also has a better and actually existing healthcare system. Each city has itās own medical building and each citizen is given at birth a health care number which is the closest thing to a social security number. In Kaldonea healthcare is dependent on how well you know the healing mages, whether or not the town you live in is setup to use taxes to pay the healing mages, or if you live in a city, whether or not you can pay the healing mage. Looking at the prompt I realize this was off topic but there isnāt a prompt for healthcare.
Tursian Hierarchy:
Royal Family- This includes cousins and second cousins which serve as the equivalent of dukes.
Royal Tursian Guard- A group of swordsmen charged with protecting the royal family who are marked by carrying embellished Katanas. These men and women are even higher in society then lords and ladies and have been known to marry into the royal family. THey are well respected, well trained, and completely ruthless.
Intellectuals- Those knowledgeable in the sciences and philosophies are well revered. In Tursia the Intellectuals are revered higher than the rich.
Well Off Families and Highest Ranking Military- Families who are rich enough to have a claim as Barons and Baronesses of the land, as well as military officials who have done great deeds for their country.
Highly respected servants and slaves- servants of the royal families and slaves with skills as artisans are given high positions.
Businessmen- self explanatory
Military- Various ranks apply
Middle class- city dwellers and a few higher class farmers
Middle class servants- typically debtors.
Lower class- lower class farmers and dwellers of the countryside.
Lower class slaves- slaves treated as property.

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā The biggest difference between the two nations is the value of Intelligence vs Honor.
Previously both nations shared the same monetary system, but after the third big war between them, they both decided to create new currencies. Besides currency both nations have differences in trade and recourses. Kaldonea is much richer in precious gems and metals then Tursia and also has far greater means of mining them. Tursia, on the other hand, has a monopoly over the textile industry. During war times trade is SUPPOSED to be cut off between the two nations, but in reality much trade still takes place behind closed doors that both nations benefit from. Despite the tension and hatred between them, they need each other, and they know it. As things are, until one nation can become completely independent of the other or until one is taken over by the other (which, face it, is never going to happen, and even if it did the Kaldoneans will ALWAYS identify as Kaldonean and the Tursians will ALWAYS identify as Tursian,) both will remain dependent upon one another.
Kaldonea: Kaldoneaās economy is supplemented quite a bit by the slave trade. Servitude and slavery are more or less a common thing, though there is a bit of a hierarchy of slavery. There is slavery that is much more like a forced payed job where the slave is actually treated fairly well and kept in good health as well as having a certain amount of freedom in their free time. Then there are debt slaves who are forced to work to pay off the people they owe. They are a step down from the well treated slaves, but are still treated relatively human. Then there are the slaves who are treated as objects and property. These kinds of slaves are more common in the poorer cities and are typically sold in the lower rings. There is an overall sense of distaste towards this form of slavery. Itās a part of society that no one likes to talk about, but everyone tolerates.
As far as agriculture goes the majority of Kaldoneaās crops are grown in north eastern Kaldonea. The majority of that area is forest and farmland all the way up to the coast. From their crops are transported throughout the nation. Much like Kansas was the breadbasket of the united states, the north east is the breadbasket of Kaldonea.
Precious metals and stones can be found especially in the mountainous areas that are scattered around Southern Kaldonea but are mined especially in the Western Peninsula where the climate is the least extreme.
Tursia: Tursiaās economy is much less dependent on slave trade than Kaldonea, though slaves are commonplace in their society. There is a lack of the extreme form of property based slavery and it is considered a disgusting practice. Drugs, however; not so much.
Drugs are especially popular in the less educated parts of Tursia, though even royalty are known to partake in recreational āmental enhancers.ā There is a general understanding that drugs are bad for your body⦠if taken too much. But as long as you have a good handle on the dosage you should be fine. Of course most of this is capitalistic nonsense (donāt do drugs kids.) Much like in India where certain drugs were believed to enhance the senses, royalty use expensive āboosterā drugs to increase their awareness. These drugs have a much more intense effect on the body than earthen drugs, including increased eyesight and hearing distance.
Aside from drugs the Tursian textile industry is also booming right alongside the herding of sheep and cattle. This practice takes place mostly in the middle western part of Tursia around the plains. Tursiaās agriculture industry is mainly focused in the same area.
The world of Ecnesse was not always occupied by human life. It is as old as earth, but it has only been inhabited by humanity for about 1,000 years. The people of Ecnesse are originally from a planet much like earth called Urr that is devoid of magical energy. Their original home planet was destroyed by a giant monstrous demon who grew because of greed, hatred, and most of all, war. What was left of their world that hadnāt already been destroyed by their wars was destroyed by the monster that chased them out of it. At the time that they needed it the most, a portal opened to another world, the world of Ecnesse, and they escaped through it. The portal closed, trapping the demon amongst its own destruction. (Iām still a little fuzzy on how the portal opened in the first place.)
There are two warriors, Tur and Kaldon, who were as close as brothers. They arose as leaders of what was left of the people of Urr (about 900) and founded the two countries that rule today, Tursia and Kaldonea. When the people of Urr first came to Ecnesse they were living in an early middle ages time period, and currently at the time the story takes place they are in a late middle ages period. There are many different myths and legends passed down by word of mouth on the subject and many of the details are skewed, but the threat of the great monster of Urr still resonates deeply. For some, it is little more than a bedtime story, and for others, it is a very real threat.
At the early stages of cultural and social growth, Tursia and Kaldonea worked together as if two parts of the same nation. Their split first began when a king with no birthright was crowned. (In this world, the king/queen is chosen when a child is born to the royal family with a certain birthmark. It more or less means that the person with that mark was chosen by the living earth itself to rule. In this case, the current king died before a child with the mark could be born, and the rule was passed to the kingās first born and markless child.) This markless and rightless king harboured darkness in his heart and exploited the Tursian king. Again, this king bore no children with the birthright, and another markless ruler was chosen. This child, raised by a dark hearted father, also harboured darkness in their heart.
As the divide grew wider, the Tursian kingās heart grew dark towards the Kaldoneans for their exploitation. The friendship between the two kingdoms were utterly broken once and for all by an assassination of the Kaldonean king by the Tursians. The light grew weaker and weaker until finally, for two hundred years, no children were born with the birthright. Now, finally, two princes are born, one to each nation, with the birthright. These are two of our three main characters, Dust and Kaz.

Everything that lives and breathes in this world is unknowingly surviving on the energy given off by a giant core that floats in space beneath Ecnesseās surface. The energy, known to the humans as Yule, is used in different ways by different creatures. The land is wide in variety and rich with culture, and the whole world is built upon self exploration and heart.
