The First World War (1914-18) was the first global conflict, the first mechanised conflict, and the first to involve civilians far from the fighting front. In this gallery of 50 images, we explore the history of the war and follow its development in various theatres on land, in the air, and at sea. The story begins with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo and ends with the Paris Peace Conference. Along the way there was heroism and tragedy, innovation and incompetence, and horror and humanity as the world fought what would become known simply as the 'Great War'.
