The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a flash flood watch for North Central; St.Thomas…St. John.. and Adjacent Islands; Eastern Interior; Culebra; Central Interior; St Croix; Vieques; San Juan and Vicinity; Northeast; Southeast; Ponce and Vicinity starting on 9/28/2018 3:00:00 PM. At the end of July, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released its land use plan for Alaska’s Eastern Interior, a region of vast landscapes and complex river systems spanning 6.5 million acres of some of America’s most pristine land. This plan will determine the future of the Steese National Conservation Area, the White Mountains National Recreation Area, the Fortymile Wild & Scenic River region, and the Upper Draanjik River (also known as the Black River) region for the next 20 years.
In a draft management plan released in February of 2012, the BLM had identified areas important for conservation – but left Areas of Critical Environmental Concern open to development such as mining. In the years following, thousands of advocates sent messages urging the BLM to protect areas set aside for conservation from development. Local tribal leaders traveled to Washington, DC to ask the BLM to safeguard lands critical to sustaining their communities and culture.
And the BLM listened. The proposed final plan released this year strikes the right balance between development, protection of traditional land uses, and conservation of BLM wild places in Alaska’s Eastern Interior. Over 4.8 million acres of incredible public land would be protected from the impacts of mining, and roughly 1.7 million acres would be open to mining.
But we’re still months away from final “Records of Decision” that will conclude an 8 year public process to determine the management of the Eastern Interior. We urge the BLM to stand strong and ensure lands important to iconic wildlife, outstanding opportunities for outdoor recreation, and sustaining Alaska Native communities are safeguarded from development for now and generations to come.

While the plan is still being analyzed, we commend BLM for listening to the region’s Alaska Native communities and making apparent plan improvements that sustain traditional land uses. Gwich'in elder Marilyn Savage grew up in the Gwichyaa Zhee Gwich’in territory of Alaska's vast Eastern Interior, an area containing millions of acres of U.S. public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Currently, the BLM is finalizing a plan for how this region will be managed for the next 20-30 years. Several Interior Alaskan villages have proposed that the BLM protect traditional uses of public land by designating an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) in the Draanjik or the Upper Black River region that would safeguard 1.5 million acres of public land from energy development, mining, and other impacts to the area's wild character. Marilyn got involved in the process because BLM’s draft plan accepted the tribe’s ACEC nomination for protection, but then opened the area to mining. She hopes the BLM will adopt real protections for traditional lands when making its final decisions about how this pristine public land should be managed. A final Resource Management Plan for the Eastern Interior is expected in the coming weeks.
