Megatherium, The Giant Ground Sloth
What is a megatherium?
Megatherium also know as “Great Beast” was a elephant-sized sloth from the early pliocene living in South america. In its habitat very few other animals even came close to comparing in size only being over shadowed by the giant rhinoceros Paraceratherium and the king of the mammals Palaeoloxodon.
The Megatherium grew up to 4 tonnes and up to 6 meters (20ft) in length. Megatherium could be compared to the modern elephant. being as large as it is allowed it to feed at heights unreachable by the other competing herbivores. being the only one who could reach the food at the top of trees they were able to get a free range of food, with their cone-shaped mouth they were able to pick the plants and fruits of their choosing.
How did the Megatherium live?
The megatherium would mostly live in groups foraging for food but could also live alone in caves, as it didn't have many predators it could mostly live its life once it reached adolescence as freely as it wanted to.
Megatherium would live all the way up to the end of the Pleistocene, this climate was very different from when they arose, up to 30% of the earths surface was covered in ice and Megatheriums thick fur and abundant food choices from being able to reach the highest plants.
Early humans such as Homo Erectus would hunt Megatherium to create warm clothes to keep them from freezing to death, as Homo erectus was overall less bulky and muscular as previous hominins meaning they would be less resilient to the cold.
When did Megatherium go extinct?
In south america the giant ground sloth lived up until 8,500BCE, the most possible cause of extinction is the spreading of early humans hunting them to extinction. As humans started to create sharper tools and started to breed more there was a need for more food meaning humans had to start hunting more and more food and going for larger and larger prey.
