i know no one asked but here’s my general opinion on “do you believe X person is faking Y” (dysphoria, mental illness, etc):
humans are so diverse, and most people only ever have their experiences to go off of, that it is so hard to tell if someone is lying about something or just having a different experience. for example:
i have gender dysphoria! i have strong top dysphoria, mild bottom dysphoria, dysphoria about my hips and my face looking too feminine, etc. however, i do not feel as much dysphoria in cosplay. if i cosplay jester, or jade harley, or vex’ahlia, i can sort of convince my brain that i’m only pretending to be a girl, and i’m not actually being one. therefore, no dysphoria. it’s cosplay. it’s all fake.
but someone might look at my icon or my cosplay pictures and see that i’m AFAB nonbinary, and convince themselves that i’m faking being trans, or that i’m faking my dysphoria, because maybe their dysphoria is just as bad in cosplay, or someone else they know has bad dysphoria in cosplay. even someone that is AFAB and dresses very feminine and goes by their birthname and she/her pronouns might have dysphoria! maybe her dysphoria gets worse when she tries to present more masculine because even when it feels like she’s trying really hard to look like a guy she still gets called ma’am in stores. maybe that’s how she copes.
saying “you can’t have [this thing] because you don’t present with it the way that i expect you to” is, surprise, a little fucked up! i could go on a rant about how generally believing people actually opens up resources for those who have it the worst but this post is much longer than i expected so i’ll leave that for another time.
