A was still breathing hard from their fight, but as they were catching their breath a slow smile tugged at their lips. They leaned heavier onto B to properly pin them against the wall, A’s knife pressing coldly against B’s throat.
“Now that I finally have your attention,” A crooned, still slightly out of breath. “Will you listen to me?”
“I did listen, and I didn’t believe you. Hence the fighting.” B spat back.
A’s smile fell, only a little and their eyes glinted dangerously. The knife pressed harder against B’s throat and they couldn’t stop their body from freezing by reflex.
“C has you under their spell, poisoned you with lies about me, but that’s all they are, lies!”
B was forced to look right back at A’s eyes, that familiar warm brown stare that always had been followed by their sharp smile. It stung B painfully to remember where they’d both started, years ago joining the team almost at the same time. How A and B had shared training together, how they’d pestered C with questions about everything until C would snap and send them on extra laps around the training grounds.
They’d grown so close, B had once trusted A with their life. But that was long gone now. It had to be.
B pushed away the memories, forcing themself to the painful present where the only option was the one C had given them. And it couldn’t include trust for A anymore.
“C’s not the one threatening me.” B retorted and gave a furious look down at the hand A held the knife under B’s chin.
“Not with a knife, no. C is smarter than that, they made me out to be the bad guy, because I know the truth.”
A paused to let it sink in. B only squinted back at them.
“You’re right… You’re not smart.”
“I’m desperate!” A snapped with a frustrated growl. B flinched as the knife dug into their skin. A’s eyes widened in sudden shock and drew it back.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean-” They stammered, eyes locked on the small knick they'd made under B’s chin.
B wasted no time. As soon as the knife was away from their skin, they pushed the distracted A away from them to then kick them square in their stomach. It sent A stumbling backwards and tripping onto the ground hard, the knife slid out of their hand and skidded away.
“You’re a liar and a traitor, just like C said.” B growled at A who tried to scramble away from them and catching their breath the kick must’ve stolen from them. “And your behaviour only proves it.”
“You were the one who started fighting! I only wanted to talk.”
“Lie, you mean.” B countered.
They pulled out their weapon, the one they’d hesitated to bring out at the beginning, but now A stilled on the ground as soon as they saw the gun. The air shifted between them and felt like it dropped in temperature.
“B…” A whispered and B couldn’t believe they'd finally succeeded to wipe out A’s smug smile, the one that had been ever present when they still belonged to the team. And somehow, it didn’t feel as good as it should have.
“I’m not going to kill you, but I will shoot you somewhere less vital if you try to run away.” B said quietly, but the tension between them had hung itself like a quiet blanket over them both, silencing every other sound.
“B… please, listen to me-”
“No.” B ground out.
“Don’t take me to C, please. They… They’ll kill me, please-”
There was a click from the gun in B’s hands and A fell silent, their eyes turning wide with fear.
For a moment B hesitated. They’d trusted A once, and it was a hard thing to shake, despite C’s warning in their head. There was a small voice in the back of their mind, begging to just wait a little, let A talk. Then, they shook that thought loose and shoved it further back.
B aimed the gun on A and turned their voice cold. “Get up.”
