Why are dusts called dusts?
The Gatling combo system within Guilty Gear is as old as the series itself.
Basic combos string together from light to heavy attacks as:
Punch > Kick > Slash > Heavy-Slash > Dust
Dust, however, is different because of the strength and power it has to launch opponents into a Homing-Jump Air Combo.
Dust also serves as the de-facto “Sweep” and “jumping knockdown attack” that knocks most opponents out of the air (making people think twice about using air attacks). It also sometimes serves as a tool for some OTG (off-the-ground) combos during a sweep.
It’s also slightly slower than a typical attack so it’s used for mixups as an instant overhead for people who block low. Other than that, it can be cancelled in to by most other weaker attacks at any time to its benefit. Some characters like Slayer and May can even feint theirs for fake-outs.
Dust gets its name (probably) from the 1984 Melodic/Power/Thrash Metal band “Angel Dust/Angeldust”.
The idea is that the attack is ‘gonna reduce you to dust!’
Or, if you want a more Narcotic example “Send you 'flyin’ like Angel Dust!”
If you don’t know what Angel Dust is, ask your parents…
SAY 'NO’ TO DRUGS!
Bit of trivia, in the original Guilty Gear it was mispelled as 'Dast’ in the in-game display.
