This picture of our new friend Joann and Duncan really puts into perspective how big Duncan is! Why is Duncan bigger than other cattle you’ve seen, you ask? Because he’s a male Holstein steer and you never see them live past infancy except in a sanctuary setting. Because Holsteins are bred for their milk production, baby boy calves are immediately taken from their mothers at birth and either shot or raised for a few months in a tiny enclosure for veal. The small living space and diet depriving them of iron assures their muscles don’t develop properly and their meat stays soft and pink. Duncan Ace Freckleface was saved by a wonderful young man, @lukepeters18 from a veal farm as a tiny baby when he learned about the cruelty of the dairy industry. We’re bringing the moos home from cow camp a month early because temperatures are skyrocketing (well above what’s normal for June here), and we need to be able to keep an eye on them and keep them cool! MacFarland will have access to his own personal evaporative cooler and Maple and Duncan will get hose downs as needed on these stiflingly hot days. 🥵 An early departure from grazing means ordering a month of extra hay, which we can do thanks to YOU our generous supporters who allow us to give these animals the best care possible.
