dulce et decorum est { mikasa ackerman }
"My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est
Pro patria mori." - Wilfred Owen
Perhaps the city itself was not at fault, the steel buildings did no harm. It was the people, the humans that tainted it, adulterated the world that had done nothing to deserve the scar of civilization. Levi had never felt trapped, never confined by the three walls that had before guaranteed him a life of peace. He had no chance to feel trapped when he was always putting his life on the line for the sake of simply trying to unravel the mystery of the titans.
However, nothing now was stopping him from exploring, truly. There was nothing but himself refraining him from seeing the endless bodies of water that they called sea, sprawling landscapes of sand, fields of ice that went on as far as the eye could sea, and mountains of liquid flame. If Levi had tried even to find someone to blame for his new state of hopelessness, of being trapped and caged inside this labyrinth of buildings, he would only find himself to berate.
However, despite his almost claustrophobia, there was no true drive within him, no young passion to fulfill his life or whatever bullshit overly romanticized books and media spouted. He wouldn't suddenly fulfill his life purpose if he decided to go sight seeing. There wasn't anything left, was there? Death would simply claim him when it pleased and he had fulfilled his duty, had he not? He briefly thought about telling death to go fuck off and go find someone else to pester but with years of death lingering so close to him, he did not have the heart to tell off such an old acquaintance that had stayed with him for so long when there was no one but himself.
Levi could only feel more trapped now, unfortunately with the presence of someone else. Ackerman, a girl with exceptional skill but an unfortunate dependence on her, in his opinion, highly emotionally unstable brother. Well, to be frank, she wasn't exactly sane herself but he preferred her company to his easily angered and obstinate brother. He had found respite in the shade of the trees, a respite from the noisiness and cacophony that usually accompanied the city. Ackerman had joined him, predictably, she didn't have anywhere else to be anyways and she probably found at least a slight comfort in the fact that they already knew each other. In his opinion, she was slightly too comfortable with him and he didn't take extremely well to being disrespected but they were equals now, in this world.
"At least in these trees we don't have to worry about getting eaten, huh?" He drawled, leaning against the park bench and crossing his legs, his eyes focused on an unwary bird, perched on an unsteady branch.
