Strangely familiar,
The clipped green lawn stretches on
Across foreign soil.
Silence is king here
Beneath deep garden shadows
Until babble comes.
The deep uncanny peace is broken now
By thumping, cheering, eager enemies.
A spear is thrown, sweat gathers on your brow.
There's just one this to do if you would please:
Invisible men
Require enchantment lifted
By a braver girl.
A fine country house
Shelters fell magician's book
In bright summer heat.
The quest and spell are frightful for the child they mean
To recruit, but perhaps old hat for a titled valiant queen.
The things she pointed at were dotted all over the grass.

Coriakin ( the star and the magician who guides the dufflepuds )
And there was something – a sort of little bundle – lying on the grass at the foot of each stalk.

Rereading The Dawn Treader
I’m in a CS Lewis class (”CS Lewis and the Liberal Arts” taught by CS Lewis scholar Peter Schakel), and I just finished The Voyage of the Dawn Treader for that class. Rereading this was, again, thought-provoking. I really love Lewis’s imagery and the simplicity of his diction. Yes, this is very much a children’s story, but it’s a children’s story that I think anyone could appreciate. It’s more of an adventure story than LWW; it doesn’t really follow the idea of a hero story. The Dawn Treader follows a plot line, but it has quite a number of seemingly random diversions. (Most of these diversions fall into the category of providing food/water for the characters or providing an opportunity for the main characters to learn about themselves. Frequently both.) The random diversions are incredibly well written and imaginative, though, and it’s a wonderful story overall.
Also, the Monopods (or Dufflepuds as they call themselves) are hilarious, and the scenes around Eustace being a dragon tell a tale of redemption in a very concrete way.Â
Title? The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Author? CS Lewis. Page count? 216, in my copy, which is old enough that it fell apart on my face at least once. Rating? G (some mention of alcohol - I believe Eustace gets a hangover - and some violence, especially around the slave trade, but not much of either). My take? An excellent story well worth the read (and at least a few re-reads).
