Close ups & some thoughts

I have a sinking feeling that Doomsday was one of those characters either created without a backstory in mind OR his intended origin story is not the one we eventually GOT.

Like literally panels under the cut but yeah I think the Newsboys should have gotten some of Donavan's anti-cadmus merch they deserve it. Bobby isn't here because she doesn't know to hate it yet but one day...

which is not to say there is nothing interesting to be said about early kon & clark and their relationship as it progressed, because of course there is! but the fact of the matter is that kon did have a guardian who was supposed to be responsible for him, but who was not qualified and did fail him in many many ways despite loving him dearly. and yet all too often dubbilex is completely left out of these discussions.

this is also not to say that i hate dubbilex or blame him for everything. kesel's inability to decide on a narrative tone made the story keep pingponging around as to whether rex (and tana) exploiting kon were going to be treated with weight or not, which of course meant that dubbilex never really was able to offer any consequences because kesel brushed things off with humor. but even setting that doylist note aside, in a watsonian way, it's very easy to point at the fact that dubbilex himself had never lived outside of cadmus before this point. he was very sheltered himself despite being an adult. it isn't hard to conceive of him as a character who truly did love kon, but because of his own lack of life experience and inclination to believe the best of others, was unable to actually provide the kind of guardianship kon needed.
