when i had first heard of the debut of new emotions - I was skeptical. for good reason i'd reckon. I always had this analogy in my head watching the movie - the emotions in riley's head were like primary colours - complete in themselves because when they're brought together, an endless amount of colours can be dreamed into existence. similarly, in my mind, the emotions in riley's head came together to create a plethora of emotions, more complex than just happiness or sadness, anger, disgust or fear. so how do you choose a handful of emotions to portray a child foraying into adulthood? it's impossible, just like picking a couple of colours to create from a palette of primary colours.

disney-pixar though, have yet again proved that sometimes you don't have to be right or correct, but merely convincing enough. and a convincing story they did tell. the writers somehow picked the discomfort you feel as you grow into the ill-fitting shoes that adolescence hands you, shoes that you often take time to grow into, and yet feel compelled to wear before you're ready, and channeled them into commendably written little people.

while i was initially critical about the time span the movie covers, I was later reminded that the movie is made for kids, kids don't care if you have a life-altering revelation over the span of a weekend. the fact that adults of this generation take comfort in their stories should be taken up with disney-pixar (or perhaps we should thank them with a nice bouquet of flowers). besides, growth and revelations don't always take time and experience, sometimes they do happen in the space of seconds. that's life.
