We are thrilled that Chris Doyle’s #MTAArts digital animation, The Fluid, was selected as a DSE 2018 APEX Awards finalist! Commissioned by MTA Arts & Design, The Fluid is based on Hudson River painter #ThomasCole’s cycle of paintings, The Course of Empire, weaving together references to Hudson River and Japanese Edo painting and 20th century abstraction. The animation explores the way we view water and landscape, focusing on the rhythmic aspects of water at every scale. The piece drifts between forms of representation and abstraction to echo the tidal motion of daily commuters passing through Fulton Center. Doyle’s immersive 52-channel digital animation is on view for two minutes at the top of each hour in the Fulton Center complex and the Dey Street pedestrian tunnel that connects to the R line and the World Trade Center PATH station.
