The air in the ballroom was thick with the scent of expensive cologne, floral arrangements, and the crisp, bubbly sting of vintage champagne. It was the kind of atmosphere that usually felt suffocating, but tonight, it was electric. Arirang had dropped only six hours ago, and the world was already vibrating with the impact.
You leaned against a marble pillar for a moment, catching your breath. Your heels were starting to pinch, a fair price to pay for the hours youâd spent on the dance floor with Namjoon and Jimin, screaming the lyrics to "DNA" as if it were 2017 all over again. Watching them tonight felt different. It wasn't just another comeback; it was the return of the kings. They had all finished their military service, their hair had grown back into stylish, experimental cuts, and their shoulders seemed broader, carrying the weight of their legacy with a new kind of ease.
As the DJ transitioned into a remix of "Boy With Luv," the crowd surged. You loved them, you really did, but you needed a moment of silenceâor at least, a moment where you didn't have to dodge flying elbows.
You navigated through the sea of idols, producers, and staff, heading toward the quieter lounge area near the back. Thatâs when you saw him.
Taehyung was sitting alone at a circular table draped in dark velvet. He had a glass of champagne held loosely between his fingers, his gaze fixed on the mahogany surface of the table as if he were trying to read his own reflection. He looked stunning, as usualâdressed in a sharp, slate-gray suit that hugged his frame perfectlyâbut there was a quietness about him that didn't match the roar of the party.
You smoothed down your dress and walked over, a playful smile tugging at your lips.
"Hey, stranger," you said, sliding into the chair next to him.
Taehyung jumped slightly, his deep brown eyes snapping up to meet yours. When he realized it was you, the tension in his shoulders vanished instantly, replaced by that familiar, boxy grin that always made your heart do a little skip-step.
"Y/n," he chuckled, his voice a low, honeyed rasp. "I didn't see you there."
"Clearly. You were miles away," you said, leaning your chin on your hand. "Why are you sitting back here all by yourself? The party is that way, in case you missed the giant neon signs and the screaming fans outside."
He took a slow sip of his drink, his expression turning thoughtful. "I was just... looking. Realizing how long Iâve actually been in this business. Itâs been a long time, hasnât it?"
You gave him a playful nudge with your shoulder, grinning. "Whatâs this? Are you starting to feel old, Kim Taehyung?"
He let out a soft huff of a laugh, his eyes shimmering under the dim lights. He tilted his head, seemingly weighing the question. "Maybe," he whispered, his voice trailing off as he bit his lip.
He hesitated for a second, looking around to make sure no one was eavesdropping, then leaned a little closer to you. The scent of his sandalwood perfume drifted over, warm and grounding. "Can you keep a secret?"
"Sure," you promised, your tone softening.
"Do you..." He paused, swirling the pale liquid in his glass. "Do you think BTS is old school?"
You frowned, genuinely caught off guard. "Old school? Where on earth is this coming from?"
Taehyung blushes slightly, a faint pink dusting his cheekbones. He shrugged, trying to look nonchalant, though he couldn't quite meet your eyes. "I don't know. I spend a lot of time on TikTok lately. I see our juniorsâEnhypen, TXT, all these new groups. Theyâre so fast, so... different. Their style, the way they move. Sometimes I watch them and I think, 'Are we the relics now?'"
You stared at him for a long beat, your eyebrows slowly climbing toward your hairline. You waited for the punchline, but it didn't come. He was being serious.
"Are you actually serious right now?" you asked, your voice flat with disbelief.
He laughed nervously, trying to brush it off with a wave of his hand. "Forget I said anything. Itâs just the champagne talking."
"No, absolutely not. We are talking about this," you said, shaking your head firmly. You reached out and placed a hand on his forearm, forcing him to look at the room. "Tae, look at the dance floor."
He turned his head obediently.
"Look at those people," you continued, pointing toward the center of the room where the industryâs elite were currently losing their minds. "Half of those people are idols who started their careers because of you. You aren't 'old school' in the way youâre thinking. Youâre the blueprint. Youâre the foundation."
He started to protest, but you cut him off.
"And if youâd take a better look at TikTok instead of just lurking in the shadows, youâd know that the entire world has been holding its collective breath for this comeback. The internet didn't just 'welcome you back'âit imploded. People aren't looking for the 'next' version of you. Theyâve been waiting for the only version of you."
A small, shy smile began to form on his face, but you weren't done.
"Taehyung," you said, leaning in so your words were for him and him alone. "You guys aren't just a boy band. You are the fucking Supernova of K-pop."
Taehyung burst out laughing, the sound rich and genuine. He leaned back in his chair, repeating your words in amusement. "The 'fucking' Supernova? Is that what we are?"
"I'm being dead honest," you said, your eyes bright with conviction. "And I am so incredibly proud of you. All of you. But specifically you, because you still sit at tables and wonder if you're relevant while the rest of the world is bowing down."
You grabbed an unopened glass of champagne from the center of the table and held it out to him, your eyes challenging him. "So? Are you going to cheer up now, or do I have to give this speech to the whole table?"
He smirked, a spark of his usual mischief returning to his gaze. He reached out, his fingers brushing yours as he took the glass. He didn't pull away immediately, lingering in the contact for a second too long.
"I think I'm sufficiently cheered up," he murmured.
He clinked his glass against yours with a musical ping. "To the Supernova," he toasted, his voice dripping with playful arrogance.
"To the Supernova," you echoed.
Just as you both took a sip, the opening notes of "Idol" began to blast through the massive speakers. The heavy traditional drums and the iconic, high-energy beat pulsed through the floorboards, vibrating in your chest. The room erupted in a roar of recognition.
Taehyungâs eyes lit up. He set his glass down abruptly and stood up, reaching out to grab your hand.
"Wait, what are you doing?" you laughed, nearly spilling your drink as he pulled you to your feet.
"I'm doing exactly what you told me to do," he said, his grip on your hand firm and warm. He began leading you toward the center of the chaos, weaving through the tables with a newfound energy. "I'm going to celebrate myself. And Iâm taking you with me."
"Tae, I just got off the dance floor! My feet are killing me!"
He didn't listen. He turned back to you as you reached the edge of the floor, his eyes dark and dancing with light. "You said the world was waiting for us, right? Well, don't keep them waiting."
Before you could argue, he pulled you into the thick of it. The crowd parted instinctively as Taehyung entered the space, but he didn't head for his members. Instead, he kept you close, his hand moving to your waist to steady you against the surging bodies.
When the chorus hitâ"You can't stop me lovin' myself"âTaehyung let go of all his reservations. He started to dance, not the polished, choreographed version the world saw on stage, but something raw and joyful. He moved with a fluid, effortless grace, his eyes never leaving yours.
You found yourself swept up in his wake. The exhaustion in your legs vanished, replaced by the sheer adrenaline of the moment. You danced with him, matching his energy, laughing as he spun you around. For a moment, the world outside the ballroom didn't exist. There were no charts, no military enlistments, no TikTok comments about "generations."
There was only the music, the heat of the room, and the way Taehyung looked at youâlike you were the only person who truly saw him, even when the rest of the world was watching.
As the song reached its crescendo, he pulled you back toward him, his face inches from yours, both of you breathless and beaming.
"Still feel old?" you shouted over the music.
Taehyung leaned in, his lips brushing against the shell of your ear as he whispered, "I feel like I'm just getting started."
He pulled back, his boxy smile brighter than all the strobe lights in the room, and as the beat dropped again, he spun you back into the light.
The heavy thrum of the bass had finally faded into a low, ambient hum as the cleaning crews began their slow migration across the ballroom. The glamour of the night was winding down into that hazy, golden exhaustion that only follows a truly legendary party.
You and Taehyung had found a quiet stone bench in the foyer, tucked away from the main exit. You were both tucked into your coats now, sitting shoulder-to-shoulder, the cool air from the opening doors clashing with the lingering heat of the dance floor. Every time your eyes met his, a fresh wave of giggles bubbled up between you.
"You look..." Taehyung started, pausing to let out a breathy laugh that made his shoulders shake. "You look like you fought a tornado and the tornado lost."
"And you look like a prince who stayed out past his curfew," you shot back, nudging him hard enough that he swayed.
"Guilty," he whispered, his deep voice vibrating in the small space between you.
"Is someone discovering the vintage champagne collection?"
You both looked up to see Namjoon standing over you. He looked remarkably put-together for someone who had just spearheaded a global comeback launch, though his tie was loosened and his hair was slightly mussed. He looked between the two of youâTaehyung with his head tilted back against the wall and you with your messy hair and glowing faceâand let out a soft, amused huff.
"Namjoon-ah!" Taehyung cheered, waving a hand lazily.
"I thought so," Namjoon chuckled, rolling his eyes in that fond, older-brother way of his. He turned his attention to you. "I'm heading out now. Do you need a ride? The van has an extra seat."
You waved him off with a wide, uncoordinated gesture. "Iâm okay, Joon. Go home and sleep. You did it. Arirang is a masterpiece."
Taehyung nodded emphatically, his eyes half-lidded. "Iâve got her, Hyung. Iâm going to put her in a cab. Promise."
Namjoon looked at Taehyung, then back at you, a knowing smirk playing on his lips. "Right. The two of you together. This should be interesting. Goodnight, you two. Stay safe."
Once Namjoonâs tall figure disappeared through the glass doors, the silence felt a little heavier, a little more intimate. You took a deep breath, trying to summon the strength to move.
"Okay, Supernova. Time to go," you said, pushing yourself up from the bench. Your legs felt like jelly, and you stumbled a step, catching yourself on the armrest. You turned back and held out both hands to Taehyung. "Come on. Up you get."
Taehyung looked up at you, his lower lip jutting out in a dramatic pout. "But the bench is so comfortable. Itâs solid. The floor is moving, Y/n."
"The floor is fine," you laughed, tugging at his hands. "I promise your bed is way more comfortable than a piece of cold stone. Think of the pillows, Tae. The soft blankets."
That seemed to do the trick. He groaned and finally gripped your hands, letting you pull him upward. However, his momentum was a little more than you expected. As he stood, he stumbled forward, his chest bumping into yours. His hands flew out instinctively to steady himself, landing firmly on your waist, while your hands ended up flat against his lapels.
The laughter died down into a quiet, breathless giggle as you realized how close you were. You could feel the heat radiating off him, smell the faint trace of champagne and the fading notes of his cologne. His eyes were glassy and dark, searching yours with an intensity that made your stomach flip.
"Whoops," he mumbled, his voice dropping an octave.
"Whoops," you whispered back, not moving an inch.
He cleared his throat, the corners of his mouth twitching. "Right. Cab. I promised Namjoon."
The walk to the curb was a feat of engineering. You were leaning on him, he was leaning on you, and both of you were whispering jokes that probably weren't funny but felt like the height of comedy in your current state.
Taehyung stepped toward the edge of the sidewalk and raised a long arm, looking every bit the movie star even while wobbly. A taxi pulled up almost instantly.
"Look at you," you teased, leaning against a lamp post for support. "You're so drunk you can barely stand straight."
He turned back to you, a mock-offended look on his face. "Me? Youâre the one who almost tackled me in the lobby. Youâre definitely more drunk than I am."
"Lies," you laughed.
He stepped toward the cab and held the door open for you with a flourish that was only slightly ruined by a small trip over his own feet. He grinned, waiting for you to get in, but instead, you stepped forward and wrapped your arms around his neck.
"Thank you for tonight, Tae," you said into his shoulder. "I meant what I said. You're the best."
He hugged you back, his chin resting on top of your head, his arms squeezing you tight for a long, lingering moment. "Thanks for the pep talk, Y/n. I needed it."
As you both pulled apart, the world seemed to tilt just a fraction to the left. You both swayed forward at the exact same time, trying to maintain your balance, and before either of you could register the distance closing, your lips brushed against his.
It wasn't a planned kiss; it was a soft, accidental collisionâbrief, warm, and tasting of bubbles and late-night secrets.
Taehyung let out a startled, airy chuckle as he straightened up, his hand coming up to touch his mouth. "Oh. Sorry. Gravity is... tricky."
Your face felt like it was on fire, but you couldn't stop the grin from spreading. "Actually, that was definitely my fault. My heels are lethal weapons."
Neither of you moved toward the open cab door. You just stood there on the quiet Seoul sidewalk, the streetlights casting long shadows around you. Taehyung cleared his throat, looking down at his shoes before looking back up at you, his eyes soft and filled with a sudden, sober clarity.
You looked back at him, your heart hammering against your ribs, and slowly, a shy, genuine smile broke across your face. He mirrored it, his boxy grin returning in full force.
The click of the apartment door locking behind you was the last sound of the outside world you heard before Taehyungâs mouth crashed against yours. The transition from the cool hallway to the heat of your entryway was instantaneous. He didn't wait for a light to be turned on; he guided you back until your spine hit the wood of the door with a dull thud, his body following close behind to pin you there.
Taehyungâs kiss was no longer the shy, accidental brush from the sidewalk. It was hungry and heavy with years of suppressed tension. His tongue swept against yours, tasting of expensive champagne and a sudden, sharp desperation. You let out a muffled moan into his mouth, your hands scrambling for purchase until they tangled firmly in the thick, silk-soft hair at the nape of his neck.
He pulled back just an inch, his breath hitching as he looked at you through hooded, dark eyes. "Y/n," he rasped, the sound vibrating in his chest. Before you could answer, he buried his face in the crook of your neck. His lips were hot and insistent, trailing a path of fire from your earlobe down to your collarbone.
You felt the world tilt as he gripped your thigh, hoisting it up to hook around his waist. The friction of his suit trousers against your bare skin made your head light. "Tae," you managed to gasp, your fingers tightening in his hair. "Namjoon... Namjoon can never know about this."
He hummed against your pulse point, a low, predatory sound that made your toes curl. "Namjoon is miles away," he murmured, his teeth grazing the sensitive skin just below your jaw.
You tried to find a shred of gravity, tugging his head back so he had to meet your gaze. Your chest was heaving, and your heart was hammering against your ribs like a trapped bird. "I'm serious, Taehyung. Heâs my best friend. If he finds out his teammate and I are... doing this... heâll never let us hear the end of it. He can never know."
A slow, devastating smirk spread across his face. He shifted, pressing his hips firmly against yours, making sure you could feel the hard, unmistakable evidence of how much he wanted you. "My lips are sealed," he whispered, his voice dropping to a gravelly silk. "Unless youâd rather I used them for something else?"
A shaky, breathless laugh escaped you. Your hands dropped from his hair to the cold metal of his belt buckle. Your fingers were clumsy with adrenaline and alcohol, but you managed to jerk the leather free. The sharp clink of the metal felt incredibly loud in the quiet apartment.
"Do you have some ideas then?" you challenged, your voice dropping to a provocative hum as you felt the tension in his frame snap.
Taehyung let out a low, guttural growl that started deep in his throat. He didn't say another word; he simply gripped your hips and lifted you entirely off the floor. You wrapped your other leg around his waist, clinging to his broad shoulders as he took your full weight.
"I have plenty," he promised, his forehead resting against yours for one searing second before he began the long, dark walk toward your bedroom, his hands already sliding lower to pull you even closer.
