A Holter monitor is a small, wearable device that records heartbeats. It's used to determine whether you're at risk of developing an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmias). A Holter monitor test may be used if a regular Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) does not provide enough information about the heart's condition. If the irregular heartbeats are infrequent, a longer-term monitor, such as an event recorder, may be required.

An ECG may not detect arrhythmias that occur infrequently. An ECG may overlook abnormal cardiac rhythms, but a Holter monitor may be able to detect them.

If normal Holter monitoring fails to detect an irregular heartbeat, an event monitor, which records heartbeats over several weeks, may be indicated.

Risks:

Wearing a Holter monitor does not pose any substantial dangers. Minor discomfort or skin irritation may occur where the sensors (electrodes) were implanted in some patients.
