I prefer to reply to these on my desktop, and with the freaky Texas rains we had last Thursday (seven inches in one day!) my power went out. And I found out when the power came back on the surge fried the electronics panel in my air conditioning unit. So I’ve been over at my Mom’s house for six days and I kept forgetting to grab my macbook. And I didn’t want to do it on tumblr mobile.

I’m honestly not entirely sure I can sum up what Mara has done for me in a few paragraphs but here goes nothing. Almost a year ago, I bought Unbecoming on a recommendation from a friend (Rose, I’m looking at you.). Now, before I start with this story let me get one thing established: I don’t do horror. I’m a major wimp. I can’t watch scary movies, I can’t do Stephen King, nothing even remotely creepy or I chicken out. So, needless to say, when I started reading and a ouija board popped up I was wary of the rest of the series. 

I am so happy that I didn’t stop reading. Don’t get me wrong, I was shaking during some parts, but it was so worth it. There have been few books that I have consumed the way I did these. Mara was unconventionally refreshing. She was strong, cunning, and didn’t need a guy to be save her all the time, but she also wasn’t the “I’m-a-strong-independent-woman-who-don’t-need-no-man” kind of character. Her development arc was wonderful to read, and it was amazing to watch her go from scared teenager to someone who knew exactly what she wanted and wasn’t going to let anyone take it from her.

I will never stop recommending these books to people, because Mara has changed the way I see things. Her story has the rare quality of giving you a different perspective on the world. Reading it makes you look closely between the trees in the woods, alert for a teenage boy fitting Jude’s description. It makes you stand in a room full of people wondering what they have nightmares about, what thoughts make ice form in their veins.  

I got to meet you twice, the first time at DragonCon in Atlanta and the second time at Yallfest. It was so cool to be able to talk to you but I never really felt like I had the chance to properly thank you the way I wanted to. I could write essays on why these books are important to me but no one wants to hear me ramble on that long, so I’ll just have to leave it at this:
