The fundamental grammar of drama - its basic emotional logic - is founded upon change, on transformation, upon the movement between connection and disconnection, between composition and decomposition, between euphony and a necessary cacophony of competing needs and agendas. As audience, which is largely what human beings are (audiences) we are tuned in to change, to anything that subverts, interrupts or challenges our habits and habits of thought (belief). When we are fully conscious, and not just being swept along by routine, what we are conscious of is change, contrast - the effects of composition and decomposition. As Gilles Deleuze has said: "...we experience joy when a body encounters ours and enters into composition with it, and sadness when, on the contrary, a body or an idea threaten our own coherence." This is why we are so drawn to drama, because it shows us what in essence we are, both in our being and in our becoming.
