i don't know if it's the sweetest, but i was out of town for a few weeks and i left my basil plant with a friend and while i was gone she repotted it and drew a little design on the side for me and it was lovely 🥺

I think there's definitely a regional aspect of it as well. When I lived down south, taking shoes off was to consider yourself VERY familiar/familial (like. I can count on one hand 3 people my family considered this okay to do in our home). whereas in the pacific northwest now, it's expected of ALL visitors, even if you're only staying a few minutes
Regional makes sense! I honestly wonder if some of it developed because of inclement weather differences and/or what winter is like.
