There were 3 more piles of frog eggs in the pond this morning! That's at least 17 separate batches of eggs in there now, dramatically more than we've ever had before. It's going to be a boom year for frogs. I'd already created numerous ways for developing frogs to leave the pond, but today I added a branch bridge that touches the surface of the pond to make sure that the massive frog exodus doesn't result in traffic jams and extended amphibian travel times in the summer.
Now that’s an exoskeleton.
The dragonfly that burst from this molted husk lived nearly its entire life underwater. As a larvae it was a fierce predator with an apatite for mosquito larvae, worms, and even small fish. YIKES.
Summer 2020, a well kept pond in St. Louis City.
Caught the dragonfly larvae from my tiny balcony pond. atm I got 2 but I saw at least 1 still in the mini pond.
I will bring them outside to a natural body of water. No idea how they even survived over 1 year on my balcony. My guess is that I got them, in egg form, when I took some duckweed and tiny water plant from a lake. So far I only had plants and snails in the pond. Maybe they ate the snails 🤔
But they need to move out because I want to put tiny fish in the pond and dragonflies eat fish and small critters...
One of them is bigger than my fish even 💀

Accidentally nabbed a dragonfly larvae, sorry little guy, too tired to walk another mile. Have to sleep in a fishtank.

Time of year again for Dragon fly larvae to emerge from the pond , Ive been collecting these lovely little critters exoskeletons for the kids .
this is what i’m dealing with right now. i took this video before my first ‘break’ from siphoning out dragonfly larvae. after this, i took out about 30 more, and i’m planning on getting the rest out today. i read that dragonfly larvae are dangerous to small fish. and while bettas are insectivores and would probably eat them, i felt like he would’ve been overwhelmed by all of these. (tagging hokie-pre-vet photographic-farmer WORTHLESSEST since you guys responded to the original post. c:)
